Sacred

Spirituality

The sacred is an object of veneration.

Sacred is an adjective in our language that is used to describe that which, because it has a link with a divinity or has divine characteristics, is an object of veneration . For example: "You cannot enter a sacred place dressed like that" , "I always seek refuge in the words of the Holy Book" , "For Hindus, the Ganges is a sacred river" .

The term comes from the Latin word sacrātus. This word, in turn, derives from the verb sacrare , which can be translated as "consecrate" and which comes from the noun sacrum , which means "sacred."

sacred elements

There are various elements that, in the context of a religion , are classified as sacred. Catholics speak of the Sacred Heart with reference to the heart of Jesus , symbolizing divine love in this physical organ. That is why the Sacred Heart is the protagonist of a liturgical celebration and has various spaces where devotion is paid to it.

The oil used in various Catholic and Jewish celebrations is known as Holy Oil or Holy Oil . These oil paintings are blessed.

The Sacred Mantle , on the other hand, is a cloth that would have been used to cover Jesus when he was buried. Because his face would have been engraved on said cloth, devotion is paid to him in Catholicism.

Hinduism

The Ganges River is sacred to Hinduism.

The term in culture

Within the field of culture, there are different works that have used the adjective that concerns us now in their titles. Thus, for example, we could highlight the painting "Sacred Love and Profane Love" , which was made in 1515 by the famous Italian Renaissance artist Titian .

"Venus and the Maiden" is the other name given to this emblematic work in which two women and a child are represented around a fountain while a beautiful sunset occurs. This scene is considered to show the Renaissance concept of human love as opposed to what divine love would be.

In the field of cinema, there are numerous films that have also used the aforementioned word in their titles. This would be the case, for example, of the feature film "The Sacred Mantle" or "The Sacred Robe" , which was released in 1953 by the American filmmaker Henry Koster . It is the adaptation of the 1942 novel of the same name written by Lloyd C. Douglas .

Jean Simmons, Richard Burton yVictor Mature encabezan el reparto de este filme que gira en torno a la crucifixión de Jesus y a cómo un tributo romano se transforma en creyente y en fiel defensor de ese hombre.

Other uses of the sacred concept

By extension to these meanings, something related to a supernatural force or that is worthy of admiration and devotion is classified as sacred: "The team had the sacred fire of champions" , "I feel a sacred love for my profession" , "The sacred cry was heard throughout the country .

It should be noted that the sacred can also be mentioned as sacred : "In this temple there are beautiful manifestations of sacred art."
