Definition of

logical reasoning

Analysis

Logical reasoning is a mental process that involves the application of logic.

When a person reasons, they develop reasoning . Reasoning is the mental activity that allows us to achieve the structuring and organization of ideas to reach a conclusion.

Logic , for its part, is the science dedicated to the exposition of the forms, methods and principles of scientific knowledge . Something logical, in this sense, is that which respects these rules and whose consequences are justified, valid or natural.

What is logical reasoning

Logical reasoning , in short, is a mental process that involves the application of logic . Through this type of reasoning, you can start from one or more premises to reach a conclusion that can be determined as true, false or possible.

Logical reasoning can begin with an observation (i.e., an experience) or a hypothesis. The mental process of analysis can be developed in different ways and become inductive reasoning , deductive reasoning , etc. Depending on the type of reasoning used, the conclusion will have a greater or lesser chance of being valid.

The conclusion finds its basis in the initial premises: logical reasoning is the path that links both parts. The result of the reasoning will have a certain degree of probability as to its truth , as long as the logical reasoning is valid .

Mental exercise

Through logical reasoning, you can start from hypotheses or observations to reach a conclusion.

Examples and exercises

Suppose a woman visits a country she doesn't know. The first person he starts a conversation with speaks in Italian. The same goes for the second and third. From logical reasoning, you can deduce that all people in that country speak Italian.

There are many people, mainly minors, who have not yet managed to make correct use of logical reasoning or who directly need to improve in this regard. How can they achieve that goal? Carrying out the use of a series of resources, such as games.

Specifically, at the moment, thanks to the constant use we make of mobile phones and tablets, different applications have emerged that help in this regard. Thus, there are those that manage to develop logical reasoning through entertainment such as sudoku to those that bet on puzzles , without forgetting the apps that do the same based on common exercises that are present in intelligence tests.

Logical reasoning in different sciences and disciplines

There are many children who also have difficulties when it comes to using logical reasoning to solve mathematical problems of varying complexity. Hence, their parents and teachers must help them by explaining perfectly and in a simple way the different mathematical concepts that they are using and even using whiteboards, interactive computer programs or simple diagrams that allow them to learn all the steps that must be taken to reach a final and absolutely accurate solution.

Within the university environment, we cannot forget that there are various careers that develop their programming based on logical reasoning or that this is one of their fundamental pillars. We are referring to degrees such as Mathematics, Applied Statistics, Mining and Energy Technology Engineering, Physics, Law, Computer Engineering, Philosophy, Physics or Physiotherapy, among many others.
