Persistence

Endurance

Persistence is very important to achieve a goal.

In order to fully understand the meaning of the term persistence that concerns us now, the first thing to do is proceed to determine its etymological origin. In this sense, we can say that it emanates from Latin, and more precisely from the verb persistere , which can be translated as “to remain firm and still.”

Persistence is the action and effect of persisting (remaining constant in something, lasting for a long time). For example: “If you want to be successful in this profession, you must have persistence,” “His persistence allowed him to enter the world of television and today he is a star,” “I admire your persistence and your ability to not give up.”

The importance of persistence

Persistence is considered a very important value to achieve an objective or reach a goal . Coaching experts recognize many values (such as time management, planning ability, strategy development, intrapersonal intelligence, technical and professional knowledge, etc.), but few as relevant as persistence.

This attitude and personal ability helps make up for the lack of other skills. The persistent person will continue trying despite eventual failures and will be able to learn from each one of them. Persistence is also linked to overcoming obstacles, no matter how difficult they are.

Force

Persistence is a useful value in multiple areas.

Classification according to type

Specifically, we can determine that three different types of persistence are established within coaching:

• Blind, which is that kind of persistence in which there is no achievement because it becomes the objective itself.

• Planned. We can say that this is what, if used intelligently, will ultimately allow us to achieve the objective or goals that have been proposed.

• Random. As its name indicates, it is based on the random use of the tools at hand, hoping that luck will finally give the opportunity to achieve the desired objective.

An example of persistence

A clear example to understand this typology would be the following. If we have a safe that we want to open but we do not know the numerical combination that does it, we will have to start trying alternatives until it opens.

Blind persistence would be deciding on a specific number and dialing the same number over and over again, waiting for the box to open. On the other hand, the planned would consist of following a logical sequence of alternatives and combinations until reaching the appropriate one. And finally, random persistence would mean trying random numbers, without any type of logic or order, until you find the right one.

The concept in vision, acoustics and computing

Persistence of vision , on the other hand, refers to the ability of the retina to preserve the impression of images , which provides continuity to films. Retinal persistence causes an object to be perceived even when it is no longer in front of the eyes.

In a similar sense, acoustic persistence is associated with the perceptual capacity of the ear, the speed of sound propagation and distances. These factors cause acoustic persistence to occur and an echo or reverberation to be noticed.

In computing , finally, persistence is the property of data to persist in one way or another.
