From the Latin immutabilis , immutable is an adjective that refers to that which cannot and cannot be changed . It is, therefore, something that is not changeable or unmodifiable .
For example: "The firmament, immutable, has not changed in thousands of years and will remain there until the end of time" , "It seems to have an immutable joy" , "We are going to do renovations in the house, but my husband already made it clear to me" that his office is immutable .
The possibility of change
Immutable, therefore, is a circumstance that cannot be altered . This shows us, in reality, that almost nothing is immutable. The sky can suffer the extinction of a star , to refer to the previous example.
The ocean can become contaminated, dry out or increase its water flow, while a mountain can change its appearance due to natural or man -made action. Therefore, in colloquial language, the notion of immutable is associated with something that has not changed in a long time or that is very difficult to change .
In another sense, a person is considered to be immutable when he does not show any mood changes: "The woman remained immutable when she heard the news" , "Juan is immutable: his boss chases him and harasses him, but he never reacts" , "No I am immutable: if I see that someone is bothering my family, I will go and rebuke them .
God and the immutable
The only thing truly immutable is that which transcends the temporal condition . In the field of religion , immutability is a characteristic attributed to God since He is always the same and does not undergo any mutation . Just as God does not change, neither do his designs.
The nature, character and attributes of God remain intact since the beginning of time; Furthermore, given that Christianity considers him perfect and that a change only contemplates something or someone becoming better or worse, God cannot change, he cannot become more or less benevolent. The immutability of God is necessary for religion, just as it is not necessary that his figure can or should undergo modifications.
Importance of God's immutability
There are several reasons why Christians consider the immutability of God to be of great importance:
* gives them security in the identity of God : He is their eternal Father and their saint, just as He has been since the beginning of the world for His people, as expressed in Psalm 90:2 ("Before they were born the mountains and form the earth and the world, from everlasting to everlasting, you are God");
* guarantees them the love of God : God is immutable and that also extends to the constancy of his love for his creations. Some passages in the Bible assure that "He is good", that "His mercy is eternal", that "nothing can separate us from His love...not life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor "what is to come, nor what is high, nor what is deep, nor any other created thing";
* promises them support in difficult times : the Christian religion considers that God never leaves his faithful alone, but rather leads them through the obstacles of life, in the same way that, since he is immutable, he has done so and will always do it. Psalm 4:8 expresses the confidence that God awakens in believers, which allows them to go to bed and sleep peacefully, knowing that He will protect them, relying on His comfort;
* assures them that God has a plan for their lives : since God cares for each person individually and wants the best for each person, Christians can be sure that He will guide them in the path of His will, even if for It is necessary to ask Him to enter your lives and forgive your sins .
