Desire

Couple

Sexual desire is usually an important component of a couple.

From the Latin desidium , desire is the action and effect of desiring (longing, feeling desire, aspiring for something). The concept allows us to name the affective movement or impulse towards something that is desired.

For example: “I want the work day to end as soon as possible so I can return home and be able to continue with my personal projects , “The truth is that I am quite tired and I want to take a vacation” , “It's your birthday, you have to make three wishes” , “My greatest wish is to travel the world” , “The couple must always keep the wish alive” .

What is desire

Desire, therefore, is the desire to fulfill a will or satisfy a taste. It is possible to desire material objects (a house, a car), situations ( vacations , a family reunion) or even other people ( sexual desire ).

The motivations for desire can be very varied. Sometimes, the desire arises from the memory of past experiences that were pleasant. That is the case of someone who wants to eat a certain dish that they know they like or who wants to revisit a place where they had good times. When the longing for a situation from the past becomes very intense and generates sadness, we speak of nostalgia .

In other cases, the desire is motivated by a potentiality that is conferred on what is desired: a person sees an advertisement for a new 3D television and wants to buy it since they believe that the device can provide entertainment and pleasant moments .

Driver of behavior

Desire is part of human nature and is one of the engines that drive our behavior. The man who desires something becomes an active subject who carries out various actions to satisfy his desires.

Every undertaking starts from a desire, usually related to self-improvement. When we long for something to the point of believing that it represents the only way to achieve happiness, living beings are capable of doing whatever is necessary to obtain it. In this sense, the concept of desire is closely linked to that of dream, since it is a complex state that is found at the end of a series of efforts and great dedication.

Desires do not always point to situations that have the person who feels them as the protagonist; For example, when someone expects another person to obtain satisfactory results from an undertaking, they can say "I wish you much success " or "I wish you the best", among many other possible phrases of encouragement and good wishes. Human beings also tend to express desires for happiness other than our friends and family, both in specific situations and spontaneously and constantly.

Cake

It is common for a person to make three wishes on their birthday when blowing out the candles.

Christmas and birthday wish

The term wish is strongly linked to Christmas celebrations, birthdays and the passage from one year to the next. Traditionally, children are made to believe that Santa Claus (also known as Santa Claus or Saint Nicholas) visits their homes every December 25 to bring them gifts and they are told to write him a letter with their most desired gifts. On the eve of Christmas and on the day of the holiday itself, greetings are usually used that include some word from the “wish” family ( “We wish you a very merry Christmas,” “I hope all your wishes come true.” ).

The birthday celebration, for its part, includes for many the preparation of a cake on which candles are placed that represent the age of the honoree (either one for each year or candles in the shape of numbers, among other possibilities). It is customary to turn off or dim the lights in the room in which the meeting is held, and indicate someone to come in with the cake so that the protagonist can blow out the candles, after having mentally formulated a wish.
