Affability is the quality of affable (pleasant, gentle in treatment, sweet). The term comes from the Latin affabilĭtas .
For example. “I was very pleased to visit Mr. Perkins, he is a man of great affability,” “What is the reason for such affability? I suspect that you want to ask me for something,” “I don't know if he is a bad person, but he is certainly not known for his affability.”
Concept of affability
Affability, therefore, can be associated with kindness , courtesy and cordiality . When a person is affable, he or she demonstrates friendliness , simplicity , openness, and kindness in his or her social relationships. The affable subject, upon receiving a visitor, is attentive, offers something to drink and tries to make the visitor feel comfortable.
The opposite of affability is antipathy or impoliteness . In this case, the individual in question has a parsimonious, dry and cold demeanor.
Desirable behavior
In addition to all of the above, we could establish that when a person wants to improve their level of affability, what they have to do is follow these steps:
- You should strive to be more careful in dealing with others.
- You must learn not to order without any type of reason or logic.
- She must be natural and must encourage anyone to establish close and easy communication with her.
A polite greeting or a kind comment can brighten someone else's day. Affability is also associated with respect for the current order since it allows the expression of truths that, in another tone, would cause problems and confrontations. A man can kindly ask his neighbor to lower the volume of the television without the need for aggression or violence and without disturbing peaceful coexistence; another, on the other hand, may enter into a meaningless discussion due to his lack of affability.
Affability according to religion
For religion , affability is a virtue that inclines man to say and do that which contributes to making social life more pleasant . It is not the same to live and deal with a friendly person as with another who does not show courtesy and respect.
Saint Thomas is one of the religious figures who carried out the most studies and work regarding the term affability. Specifically, he undertook an extensive writing, included in the famous "Discourse from the Summa" , where he came to make clear various fundamental questions about that virtue:
- It can act as a synonym for friendship .
- Every wise person has to have the gift of affability, with which he will be able to make life much more pleasant for everyone he lives with. However, sometimes, to avoid evil and even if it is not misunderstood by the rest of the citizens, strong laws and regulations must be established.
- It can be established that affability is related to justice, since both must allow any individual to behave with others in the best possible way.
- Bad mood, lack of education , disorder, rudeness or selfishness are contrary to the quality of being affable.
Likewise, Saint Thomas makes it clear in his work that affability also has two vices. On the one hand, there would be exaggerated flattery and on the other, severity taken to its maximum expression.
