Whiskey

Whiskey

Whiskey is a drink with a high alcohol content.

Whiskey is an English term that, in Spanish, can be mentioned as güisqui . The Royal Spanish Academy ( RAE ), however, recognizes both words as valid.

Whiskey is a drink that has a high alcohol content and can be produced using different grains. From the fermentation of cereals such as rye , barley , corn or wheat , a distillation process is carried out and then the result is stored in barrels so that it ages and acquires certain particular characteristics.

Origin of whiskey

The origins of whiskey are unclear, although the drink is linked to the Celts . There are records that, at the end of the 15th century , a Scottish monk distilled a large quantity of malt and distributed the drink as medicine . The etymology of whiskey, in fact, leads us to a Gaelic expression that can be translated as "water of life" .

Over the years, the habit of drinking whiskey spread beyond any medicinal or ritual intention. Today there are numerous types of whiskey that are sold bottled throughout the world .

Jack Daniels

Many whiskey brands have achieved worldwide fame.

The most famous

Among the best and most famous whiskeys in the world are some like these:

  • Scotch whiskey . As its name indicates, it is the one that is distilled exclusively in Scotland and has its origins as such in 1933 . Within it, there are also different types: single malt , single grain , blended , blended malt and blended grain .
  • Japanese whiskey . In recent years, the natives of the Japanese country have learned so much and have been able to apply all their knowledge very well in order to obtain the best whiskey in the world that, in the end, for many they have achieved it. And this has been demonstrated at an international level with the corresponding award. The first distillery in Japan was launched in 1924 , although it is considered that it had been produced in an artisanal way since 1870 . Compared to Scotch, it has some differences such as that bamboo is used for filtering, that it has different types of single malt and that water from natural sources is used in its production.

whiskey production

Although there are many variations, generally the whiskey production process begins when the grains are malted . The grains are then germinated, dried and roasted . By mixing them with hot water, a must is obtained to which yeasts are added for fermentation .

After several days, distillation and then aging take place. When the whiskey reaches the desired age, it is bottled for sale and distribution.

a song

We cannot ignore that in the musical field there are different songs that make the alcoholic beverage in question the protagonist. A clear example of this is the composition "Whiskey in the jar" , which is a well-known traditional Irish composition.

This song has been covered by numerous singers and bands, such as The Dubliners , Metallica , U2 , The Irish Rovers and Roger Whittaker , among many others. It is a story of absolute heartbreak.
