Vote

Expression of will

The process and result of voting is called voting.

Voting is the process and consequence of voting . This term that concerns us now has a Latin etymological origin, deriving from the verb will vote, which can be translated as "to make vows" or "to express a wish." At first it had a religious meaning since the votum was the promise that was made to the gods in order to achieve something specific.

It should be remembered that voting consists of expressing a choice . For example : "The vote to elect the next president of the club will take place tomorrow between 8 a.m. and 6 p.m." , "The government promises to implement an electronic voting system" , "The result of the vote left us very satisfied" .

Voting types

Voting can be of many types, based on the type of votes that are made in them:

  • Depending on the purpose, vows can be punishing or useful .
  • Based on the options they offer, we come across the fact that the votes can be positive, subtractive , blank or null , for example.
  • Depending on the way in which they are carried out, votes can be in person , by mail , electronic ...
Elections

A vote allows electing the authorities of a country.

Demonstration of support

Through a vote, people can express their support for a candidate, a proposition or an initiative.

Depending on the context, voting can be carried out publicly (the voter states out loud or with some gesture what his or her will is) or secretly (the vote is anonymous: no one knows how each individual votes, the votes are only added to know the results).

Voting Examples

Suppose the board of directors of a company is considering opening a new branch. After a debate among the five members, the vote is taken: when asked "Who agrees with the project?" , those who are in favor raise their hands to express their vote . As the result of the vote is four votes in favor and one against, the initiative is approved.

To elect the president of a nation , on the other hand, in a country a vote is carried out among all inhabitants over 18 years of age. In this case, the vote is secret. People enter alone into a room where there are ballots or ballots with the names of the candidates, they have to choose who they want to vote for and put the paper in an envelope. Then, said envelope is placed in an urn. At the end of the day, the votes are counted throughout the country. The vote will mark the election of a new president for the region in question.

In a self-respecting democratic country, it is determined that the votes made in voting by citizens must be unique, free, equal, direct and secret.

Although it may seem incredible to us now, for many centuries women did not have the right to participate in the votes that elected the political leaders of their countries. Thus, for example, in Spain and after many years of struggle by women like Clara Campoamor, women's suffrage was achieved in 1930 .

Currently, reality television shows such as "Big Brother" also talk about voting. Specifically, each week viewers, with their phone calls or mobile messages, vote on which contestant they want to be expelled.
