Vocation is the inclination to any state , career or profession . The term comes from the Latin vocatio and, for religious people, it is the inspiration with which God calls some state . That is why the concept is also used as a synonym for calling or convocation.
At a general level, the vocation appears related to the desires and what is inspiring for each subject. It is assumed that the vocation matches the tastes , interests and aptitudes of the person.
A continuous construction
The vocation is also considered a process that develops throughout life, since it is built permanently . It involves discovering who I am , how I am and where I want to go . The answers to these questions will mark the vocation and the path to follow for the individual.
At the end of secondary school, each human being begins to act in accordance with their vocation. The choice of a professional career or a job , for example, usually responds to one's vocation. In many educational centers, they use the help of vocational counselors , who, through a series of tests and talks, try to get adolescents to follow a path that satisfies them when they finish their mandatory studies.
However, the process of discovering one's own vocation is very complex and is not the same for all people. There are those who believe they have always known that they feel a strong bond with a certain discipline, and these contrast with people who reach the middle of their lives and wonder what they have done and why. Vocational guidance usually fails more times than it succeeds, since it is based on a closed recipe, which ignores the fundamental aspects of each person, and which aims to find an answer in the shortest possible time.
Vocation and work
In the real world, outside of the tests and the euphoria of those who feel lucky to be able to pursue a university degree after finishing high school, most people express that their job does not represent their calling, but that they chose that particular path. because their parents worked in the same profession , or because they did not know what to study and listened to a vocational counselor.
In general, those who tend to be clear about their mission on this planet are artists, and that explains why the concept of vocation is so linked to art . The question is, then, why? Why does a singer who sits on a pedestrian street with his guitar and lives off the coins kindly donated by passersby seem more satisfied than an accountant who earns enough to support his partner and three children?
It is likely that the answer lies in how much each individual has delved into his past, into his roots , into the reasons for each aspect of his personality, in order to be able to study his needs, what makes him happy, as well as to defend himself from what threaten to tear down everything you have built. The vocation should be that which fulfills us, that gives every cell in our body an unsurpassable sensation, an activity that while we do it makes us feel that we do not need anything else. Contrasting this with the pace of life we live today and with the growing tendency of people to cover up problems with noise and money, it is understandable that very few have heard that call and that even fewer people have heeded it.
And this last point leads us to understand that the vocation requires a lot of work so that it does not become a waste of energy; Knowing that medicine is the reason for my life is the beginning, and it will only make sense if I dedicate every day to studying and becoming a more experienced and trained professional, with enough tools to make myself truly useful.
