bible verse

In the Bible we find the verse as a structural unit

The word versicŭlus comes from versus , which can be translated as “verse” . The notion came into our language as a verse .

In the sacred writings

The short fragments that are distinguished within the chapters of the Bible and other books considered sacred are called verses. It is a group of phrases or sentences that facilitate access to the content and its study.

It can be said that the verses are part of the organization of the Bible . They are characterized by being numbered , which helps to find them and eventually quote them in a sermon or in another context.

Structure of the Bible

The Bible is divided in several ways. On the one hand, it is possible to differentiate between the Old Testament and the New Testament . In each one, there are also different books : Genesis , Exodus , Gospel of Matthew , Gospel of John , Acts of the Apostles , Epistle of Judas , etc.

The name of each book appears in the index , sometimes abbreviated ( Ex. instead of Exodus , for example). Then a first number is indicated, corresponding to the chapter of the book in question. Finally, after the chapter number and after a colon ( :), is the verse number.

Thus, suppose we come across a mention of John 14:6 . As we indicated above, John refers to the book (the Gospel of John ). Number 14 , meanwhile, alludes to the chapter , while number 6 details the verse . “I am the way, the truth and the life” begins this biblical fragment .

Most famous verses of the Bible

For both religious people and literature lovers, the Bible is a very particular source of stories, in part because it has a poorly defined provenance and because it is so old. Below we will look at some of the most frequently cited verses.

Philippians 4:13 . He thanks God for receiving from his son, Jesus Christ, the strength he needs to face life 's obstacles.

John 3:16 . God loved the world to such an extent that he gave his own son to awaken faith in his people and offer them eternal life in return.

Corinthians 13:4-5 . It exalts the virtues of love, starting with the kindness that characterizes it. He also points out that he is not related to pride or envy, that he is not rude, selfish, spiteful, or easily angered.

Joshua 1:9 . It reminds us that we must be strong and courageous, relying on the fact that God will never abandon us.

in literature

In literature , finally, verses are the verses that make up a poem developed without fixed meter or rhyme . These works are free verse, generally extensive.

verse poetry

In poetry, verses are verses without meter or rhyme.

The poetic form that intentionally distances itself from the rules of rhyme and meter that stand out in Western poetry published until the end of the 19th century is known as free verse . This tells us that it presents certain similarities with poetic prose and prose poems , although it differs from them in the visual aspect because it maintains the indented lines in the style of a traditional poem.

The verse was used in surrealism , a movement that was born on the European continent after World War I and was especially influenced by Dadaism . According to the description that the Royal Spanish Academy gives us about it, it is an attempt to overcome the real by relying on the dreamlike and irrational through the unconscious or thought. Precisely, surrealism was not limited by literary traditions, to the point of challenging the meter itself.
