Veneration

Procession

Veneration involves worshiping.

Veneration is the act and result of venerating ( worshiping , respecting something or someone to the maximum). The concept, which comes from the Latin term veneratĭo , is usually used in the field of religion .

For example: "The image will be displayed in the town square for the veneration of believers" , "The veneration of this saint dates back several centuries" , "The Virgin Mary is an object of popular veneration in this city" .

Characteristics of veneration

Veneration is intended for divinities and saints , but also for those objects that represent them or that function as symbols (such as the cross ). This attitude is expressed through rituals and ceremonies, such as processions or the act of kissing a sculpture.

In many corners of the planet, religious veneration is a fundamental part of the lives of many of its citizens. A good example of this could be Spain , where Holy Week is celebrated. In this religious celebration , images are processed daily through the streets of the cities so that the faithful can show their faith and the feeling they have towards those carvings.

However, religious veneration can be demonstrated through other activities, such as hand-kissing and solemn triduums in honor of certain saints.

This without overlooking the fact that there are also pilgrimages that have the objective of showing veneration towards an image. Thus, for example, although there are those who do them simply as a hobby, there are many other people who do it to show their faith, ask God for help or to make clear the penance they have to fulfill after having promised. The clearest example of this is the pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela .

idolatry

Beyond the religious, the idea of veneration is associated with idolatry and the feelings generated by popular figures. A rock band, in this sense, can generate veneration among young people: the group's followers can spend several sleepless nights to get tickets for a concert, they wait for the musicians at the door of a hotel, they get the name of the band tattooed. band, etc.

In recent decades, one of the international artists who managed to arouse the most veneration around the world was Justin Bieber . The singer, known for songs like "Baby" and "One Time" , even generated a multitude of controversies for his inappropriate behavior. However, there are thousands of young people who worship him, who are capable of spending a month camping outside the venues where he is going to perform, tattooing his name somewhere on their bodies...

Other types of veneration

One can also speak of "political veneration" , "journalistic veneration" or "artistic veneration" , to name a few possibilities, when a certain sector of society is very respectful of something or someone.

"The producer enjoyed television veneration for decades thanks to the immense number of programs he created" and "The Minister of Economy today enjoys financial veneration for the projects he announced months ago" are expressions that show this meaning.
