A gale is an intense wind.

A gale is a wind of great intensity . The term has its origins in vent d'aval , a French expression that can be translated as “wind from below.”

For example: “Suddenly, a gale destroyed the umbrellas and people had to leave the beach,” “A strong gale damaged trees in the town of Puerto Marcos,” “The island's telecommunications networks were destroyed by the gale”

Types of gale

The concept of gale sometimes acquires more specific meanings. In some countries , a gale includes, in addition to wind, precipitation . That is why it could be a storm : “There are three neighborhoods flooded because of the gale,” “Meteorologists warned that, in the next few days, a gale could occur in the city,” “I think there will be a gale tonight.”

The Royal Spanish Academy ( RAE ), in its dictionary, also recognizes the word gale as an intense wind that blows towards the west and comes from the south . There are regions, on the other hand, that mention gales as winds that come from the sea .

Temporary

The gale may be a storm.

Symbolic uses of the concept

More popularly, the term gale is used with another meaning. Thus, for example, when it is said that a person is a gale, it is a way of indicating that he is very restless, that he has a lot of strength and energy or that he has an overwhelming personality.

In this way, we find the fact that in the artistic field, the singer Lola Flores , “La Faraona” , has always been spoken of as an authentic gale of emotions and strength on stage.

There is also another symbolic use of gale, linked to that which resembles an alluvium or an avalanche . If a soccer team defeats its rival 8 to 0 , a journalist could say that the team was a “storm of goals.” A political leader, on the other hand, can accuse the government of the day of promoting a “storm of corruption” in all spheres of the State since he maintains that there are many officials who commit illegal acts.

“Vendaval” is also one of the most interesting works that have come from the pen of the Canarian writer Alberto Vázquez Figueroa ( 1936 ). The time he spent as a special envoy to that conflict to provide information to the newspaper he worked for served as inspiration and a source of great wealth for capturing the reality he experienced and presenting the most significant characters. Specifically, among these are President Balaguer , Colonel Caamaño , General Imbert-Barrera ...

In the same way, we cannot forget that Vendaval is the name of a heavy metal group from Spain , which was founded in 2002 and is known for songs such as “Pecado immortal” and “Mi Otro Half” .
