Universal values are shared by all people.
Universal values are formed by the implicit norms of behavior that are necessary to live in a harmonious and peaceful society. Before entering fully into the in-depth analysis of the concept, it is important that we establish the etymological origin of the two words that give it shape:
- Courage comes from Latin and more specifically from the word valere , which can be translated as “to be strong.”
- Universal , for its part, also emanates from Latin. More precisely, we can establish that it comes from universalis , which is equivalent to “belonging to the universe.”
Concept of universal value
A value is a quality that gives people, things or events an estimate . The term is used to name the moral characteristics that are inherent to a subject ( piety , responsibility , etc.).
Universal , on the other hand, is an adjective that is linked to what belongs to or relates to the universe. The concept refers to the set of all created things and that which is common to all of their species.
The idea of universal values is difficult to define, since a value is associated with morality and ethics , which is difficult to translate to a group level. In other words: all people have certain values that arise from within them and that guide their actions. Since not all human beings think the same way, the values of one individual may differ from the values of another. Universal values, on the other hand, have the particularity of being shared at a social level.
Kindness is one of the most recognized universal values.
Some examples
Cultural differences aside, it can be stated that kindness , solidarity and honesty are desired virtues in any country or region. These are, therefore, universal values.
In addition to those presented, others of an ethical and civic nature are considered universal values, such as the following:
- Modesty , which is what people who do not brag about their successes, their qualities or their triumphs possess. It is considered that, in this way, they do not harm others by making them feel inferior.
- Prudence . Another of the most important universal values is the one that individuals have who always carry out their actions based on reason, and not letting themselves be carried away by impulses. In addition to all this, it is considered that prudence is what should guide the rest of the values.
- Responsibility . No less significant within the set of universal values is this, which is considered to be the virtue possessed by those who are capable of making important decisions for themselves and for the rest of the people around them. Specifically, what they will do is coordinate, direct and channel activities with reason, seriousness and commitment.
Loyalty and strength are also other universal values that are considered essential in any human being.
It should be noted that universal values are acquired through family and school education, since the socialization process implies that new generations internalize timeless concepts.
