Fence

Siege

A fence is a fence.

A fence is a fence that is assembled with different stakes or obstacles to protect or close a certain space . For example: "The Police installed a fence so that the public cannot approach the stage" , "We are going to have to put a fence in the garden so that stray dogs and cats do not enter" , "The young man wanted to jump over the fence" to escape, but he was caught .

Generally a fence seeks to prevent an intruder from entering a place . The owner of a home that has a garden can install a fence to prevent people from entering his property. A farmer, for his part, can place fences to delimit his land .

Etymology of fence

To accurately determine the meaning of the word, it is important to first know its etymological origin.

In this case we can say that it derives from the Latin vallum , which can be translated as "palisade" . We must also highlight that, at first, the notion was used in the military field, since in the 2nd century the Romans proceeded to build two fences to protect themselves and gain security : we are referring to what was known as Antonini Vallum ( Antonine's Wall ) and Vallum Hadriani ( Hadrian's Wall ).

Equine

Fences can prevent animals from escaping.

Different types

There are different types of fences. The most popular are those made with wooden boards : the vertical boards are nailed into the ground and placed at a certain distance from each other, remaining joined by horizontal boards. There are also metal and plastic fences .

In addition to those mentioned, we have to mention other types of fences that are also relevant:

  • Electrified fence . As its name indicates, it is a structure or fence that works based on the principle of electric discharges. It is used as a protection and safety measure, since anyone who touches or brushes it will suffer a shock. In plots to prevent intruders or animals from escaping, this type of fence can be found.
  • Pet fence . It is a unique device that comes in the form of a collar and is placed on the cat or dog in question. Your objective is none other than to stay within the space indicated, since if you exceed those limits you will receive a mild shock.
  • Children's fence . Under this name is a safety device that is placed on balconies, terraces and stairs , for example, to prevent children from falling.

Other types of fences

In the field of sport , hurdles are the obstacles that athletes must jump in certain competitions, such as hurdle races ( 100 meter hurdles , 400 meter hurdles , etc.) and equestrian jumping (where the horse, guided by a rider , has to jump fences).

Billboards , finally, are posters that are installed in public spaces to promote different products : "The Spanish company will pay one million euros a year for its logo to appear on the stadium's billboards."
