Uncle

Family

Regarding a person, his uncle is the brother of his mother or father.

Uncle is a term that derives from the Latin word thius . The concept is used, with respect to an individual, to refer to the sister or brother of their mother or father .

Let's assume that Gerardo and Ana Laura are married and have a son named Bruno . Gerardo , in turn, has a brother named Miguel . Bruno 's uncle, therefore, is Miguel (since this is his father's brother). If Miguel is married to a woman , she would be Bruno 's aunt.

Different kinds of guys

It is possible to differentiate between the blood uncle and the political uncle . If we return to our example, Miguel is Bruno 's blood uncle. However, his wife would be the child's aunt-in-law: she would not have a blood relationship with him, but rather their bond would be by affinity (constituted legally by having married Miguel ).

It should be noted that the notion of uncle is also usually used to name, with respect to a subject, the cousin of his mother or father . Specifically, this relationship is called second uncle . A great-uncle , on the other hand, is the brother of a person's grandfather.

Companions

In some countries, the term uncle is used to refer to a friend or colleague.

Other uses of the term

In some countries , uncle is a colloquial term used to name an individual whose name is unknown or to refer to a colleague or friend .

For example: “The owner of the bar is a very nice and nice guy” , “Don't waste any more time with that woman, man! Forget it and come have fun with us.”

Rich Uncle

Carl Barks , an artist who worked for a time for Disney , created in 1947 a character called Scrooge McDuck , known in Spanish-speaking countries by various names: Tío Rico , Rico McPato , Tío Gilito , Gilito McPato , and even Tío Patilludo. (with this last name he arrived in Argentina ). Regarding the English term scrooge , used in the original version, we can translate it as miser ", and this describes very well the way of being of this character; However, Barks also chose this word in homage to the character Ebenezer Scrooge , the memorable miser who Charles Dickens put as the protagonist of his "A Christmas Carol."

The breed on which the artist based himself to create the image of Uncle Rico is the Peking duck, which comes from the northwest of the Chinese city of the same name. Of course, in this case it is an anthropomorphic animal, that is, it has traits typical of human beings, such as walking upright or having arms and hands instead of wings. The character's origin is Scotland , something that can be better appreciated when watching the animations in the original language, since his accent clearly differs from those of his fellow adventurers.

Uncle Rico is the richest duck in the world, so much so that he owns a safe several stories high , full of gold coins, in which he usually dives and swims with joy to celebrate his wealth . However, his most characteristic trait is greed, and he does not like to spend his money at all, but prefers to save indefinitely.

After a few years of experiments, Barks defined the final look of Uncle Rico , and his success made him a necessary character for the Disney universe. In 1952 , for example, it already had its own magazine. In his stories , his three nephews and Donald also appear, who accompany him unconditionally.

His television series, "DuckTales" , premiered in 1987 and was widely accepted. Among the countries that made their own translations of the Tío Rico stories were Spain , Chile , Mexico and Argentina , and this had a considerable impact on the names of the characters.
