Alley

Darkness is associated with darkness.

The notion of darkness mentions the absence of light . The concept, which comes from the Latin tenĕbrae , can be used interchangeably in its singular form ( tiniebla ) or plural ( tinieblas ).

For example: “What are you doing reading in the dark? Better turn on the lamp so as not to strain your eyes so much” , “Last night the electricity went out: we had to have dinner in the dark because we couldn't find the candles” , “The dark street scared the man, who quickened his pace” .

Symbolism of darkness

The idea of darkness is also used symbolically to name moral or spiritual darkness . In this case, darkness can be associated with a deep depression or a bad emotional moment : “Because of drugs I spent two years in darkness, but luckily I was able to recover,” “When Raúl died, I felt like I was in darkness,” “ “I was left in darkness when they fired me from the company after twenty years of work.”

Many times darkness is linked to something dark or even to hell . The Devil , in this way, is usually called The Prince of Darkness . Even Count Dracula , a fictional character created by Bram Stoker , has been named in some works as The Prince of Darkness .

Precisely, in 1966 a film titled " Dracula, Prince of Darkness " was released, made in Great Britain by the company Hammer Productions , directed by Terence Fisher and starring Christopher Lee as the Count himself. One of the most curious characteristics of this production is that Dracula does not speak at any time, and in fact he is only shown in five scenes . The preceding film was known in Spanish as " Dracula's Brides ", and the next was " Dracula Returns from the Grave ".

Darkness, in short, constitutes a real or imaginary place that is characterized by the gloomy , macabre , gloomy or gloomy . That is why when an individual is in darkness, they experience unpleasant sensations or feel fear. This has to do with the association between darkness and evil, as opposed to the relationship between light and positive.

Castle

Based on symbolism, darkness is linked to the macabre or the dark.

"The heart of darkness"

The Polish author Joshep Cornad , born in present-day Ukraine in 1857, published a long story in 1899 titled " Heart of Darkness ." The story is set in Africa and is loosely inspired by the months that the author lived in the Congo .

It is currently considered the best known of his creations, and is part of the "Great Books of the 20th Century" series, by the British publisher Penguin Books . It is worth mentioning that Conrad , whose original name was Józef Teodor Konrad Korzeniowski , used English for his literary works, instead of Polish.

The notion in religion

The Catholic Church calls the Mass held from Holy Wednesday to Good Friday in the afternoon the Office of Darkness . Since it takes place when the night begins, it literally takes place in the darkness.

Another reference to the term is found in the candelabra used especially for this office, the so-called tenebrarium , which consists of 15 yellow candles: 11 of them represent the apostles who stayed with Jesus after the betrayal of Judas; 3, to the three Marys; 1, to the Virgin Mary.
