Trend

Fashion

The idea of trend can be associated with fashion.

A trend is a current or preference towards certain ends . For example: «Lionel Messi is a great player, although he tends to attack from the left side, which helps predict his movements » , «The upward trend in prices worries economists» , «Two hours before the closing of the elections, there is no clear trend that allows us to glimpse a winner» .

The term can also be used to name the force that causes an object to lean towards another body and the thought oriented in a certain direction: "The governor showed his conservative tendency by prohibiting gay marriage" , "It is a fascist-leaning measure that undermines the rights of minorities" .

The trend as fashion

Trend is also used as a synonym for fashion , in the sense that it is a kind of social mechanism that regulates people's choices. A trend is a style or custom that leaves a mark on a period of time or in a place.

In the 1960s, for example, the trend was towards wearing very colourful clothing , with large prints and Oxford trousers (also known as elephant leg trousers ).

There is no major trend in clothing at present. In the Western world, jeans have been the standard casual wear for several decades. Formal occasions, on the other hand, require a suit and tie for men and long dresses for women. However, trends vary over the years.

Every trend tends to leave out a group of people. In principle, this phenomenon is absolutely natural and logical, since it is impossible for all human beings on the planet to share a taste or need, even more so at the same moment in history. The reasons go beyond a question of preferences, since in many cases it is necessary to have a certain purchasing power to jump on the fashion bandwagon.

Smartphone

A current trend is that people “must” use smartphones and connect to social networks.

Phones and social networks, a current phenomenon

Probably the strongest current trends revolve around mobile phones and social media . Curiously, if we look at them closely, we discover that these are two clear examples of human contradiction. Firstly, smartphones are the symbol of doing a lot but not necessarily well ; since their birth, they have added functions to the maximum, among which we find watching movies, surfing the Internet and playing games.

The first two do not need to be addressed by a brilliant mind to understand that these are activities that are much more enjoyable on a large screen, regardless of the resolution. The last one is not so obvious to casual users, but a passionate gamer knows that he will not find in this format one of the great titles, but entertainment to pass the time and a large number of shameless copies of classic games.

Moving on to the topic of social media, it is a medium through which it is possible to share ideas, photos and videos, chat, follow famous artists closely or even support causes such as veganism. Defined in this way, they do not seem to have a negative side, and could well be one of the most intelligent and useful creations of human beings . However, in practice, they constitute one more excuse to justify the lack of commitment to one's own life , the ostentation of someone who enjoys showing off their new car or their latest technology television, and a dangerously imprecise use of the word "friend".

Trends are often presented to the world in an aggressive manner, with a message that brands those who do not wish to follow them as old-fashioned or boring. Taking the examples just given, one could say in summary that "if a person does not want to watch movies and surf the Internet on 4-inch screens, try to have fun with low-quality and unoriginal games and spend hours exposing themselves in front of people who will not be there when they are really needed, then they do not know how to have fun ."
