Biology is the science that is dedicated to the study of living beings.
Being is a concept with several meanings, very frequently used, although with a definition that can be somewhat complicated to understand.
First of all, we can say that be is a copulative verb : it allows the nominal predication to be constructed, linking the subject with a predicate. In this case, the term being does not provide semantic meaning, but rather acts as a link. Sometimes, ser also becomes an abstract verb (without concrete meaning).
For example: “I would like to be invisible to walk around the meeting room without being seen” , “This can't be! Tidy up your room right now” , “When I grow up I want to be a firefighter” .
Being as a creature or entity
The concept of being is also associated with a creature or an entity . That which “is” has real existence; It is part of reality , whether physical or symbolic. That is why there are many sets or classifications that are created from the idea of being.
The human being is Homo sapiens , an animal species that is part of the hominid family. All people are human beings: in other words, we are Homo sapiens. The human being, furthermore, is a living being since it has life.
The group of living beings far transcends the human being. All animals , plants , bacteria , fungi and protozoa are living beings.
From the realm of fiction we also talk about beings. In this way, there are writers who imagined energy beings, cosmic beings , extraterrestrial beings , etc.
Human beings stand out for their creativity and intelligence.
The identity
Being is a concept that also encompasses many symbolic issues. Being oneself implies having self-awareness of one's own identity and respecting one's personality .
It is usually considered that an essence underlies being. The authenticity of the Self is given by respect for that essence, which can be associated with consciousness , the soul or the spirit (that is, it goes beyond the body).
There are issues of being that are non-transferable: emotions, thoughts, memory... Although they can be expressed, there is a subjectivity that cannot be transferred. The temperament and character of an individual also make up his being.
The living being
The idea of being alive, although it contemplates the symbolic or spiritual mentioned above in the case of humans, is directly linked to the condition of mortal . From birth, a person moves towards death: there is no way to avoid that end.
Childhood , youth , adulthood and old age are the stages of life that a human being goes through when they do not suffer a premature death. If an illness impairs health, life may end before all stages are completed. The same occurs in the case of a death due to violent or accidental causes.
What must always be considered is that living beings exist, in the material or corporeal sense, only for a time. Nature dictates that death always occurs, sooner or later. The progress of science, in any case, allows life to extend over time , extending the time spent on the earthly plane.
In other words: every living being is going to die, but the arrival of that moment is not predefined and can vary due to multiple factors. As far as human beings are concerned, there is generally a desire to postpone the end as long as possible.
Animals are beings whose behavior is marked by instinct.
A famous phrase
Throughout history there have been numerous famous phrases that have used this verb in question as a fundamental part of them. This would be the case, for example, of the emblematic “to be or not to be, that is the question.” This is the first line of one of the most important literary works in all of history: “Hamlet” , written by the British William Shakespeare in 1600 .
In the same way, we cannot ignore that there are different films that use it in their titles. An example is the feature film “To be or not to be” , which premiered in 1942 and was directed by Ernst Lubitsch .
