Feedback

Feedback is a dynamic process that involves the return of a signal to its origin with changes or adjustments, so that a new output is then generated.

The concept of feedback is not part of the dictionary of the Royal Spanish Academy ( RAE ). However, in the publication a term appears that is usually used in an equivalent way: feedback , which is used to name the return of a part of the output of a system or circuit to its own input .

We can determine, in addition to what has been stated so far, that it is a term that has its origin in Latin, since it is made up of different components of said language:

-The prefix “retro-”, which means “backwards”.

-The verb “alere”, which can be translated as “consume” or “nurture”.

-The “-mentum” component, which is used to indicate “means” or “result”.

-The suffix “-cion”, which is used to record the existence of an “action and effect”.

Feedback concept

Feedback or refeeding assumes, therefore, that a proportion of what is output is redirected to the input . This allows the behavior to be regulated and the system in question to be controlled.

It is possible to notice feedback in computing , architecture , engineering , biology and economics , among other areas. At a general level, it can be said that feedback implies that the output signal returns to its origin and then, after an analysis that allows different adjustments, it returns.

The return of a sign

Feedback can be understood as a process or mechanism that contemplates the movement of a signal within a system. The return of the signal to its input is called a feedback loop .

Feedback also appears in the communication process. In this case, it is formed by the immediate reactions of the receiver to a message: these reactions reach the sender through different means and enable an adjustment in communication.

Communication

Thanks to feedback, a project can be enriched with the contributions of different people.

Feedback at work

We can take an example of feedback in the workplace. The marketing manager informs the employees in his area that he has an idea to develop a certain campaign. After communicating the project to them, he asks them to analyze it and, the next day, give him a feedback: that is, tell him what they think, what they would change, etc.

A day later, in this way, the employees provide their contributions to the manager. This is how feedback occurs, since the manager takes these new ideas and modifies his campaign project.

Relevance of the process

In terms of feedback, it is also important to know a series of relevant data or issues that demonstrate its process, its operation and its importance:

-The person who sends a message, what is called the sender, uses it to be able to know if his words have had an effect, to know if he has achieved the goals that he had set for himself in this regard and based on the results, follow through the marked channel or directly change it.

-On the other hand, the recipient of the message must know that thanks to feedback he can conveniently influence the sender by expressing his point of view or opinion about an aspect in question.

-Indisputably, if correct use and management of the aforementioned feedback is carried out, notable benefits will be achieved, communicatively speaking, for both the sender and the receiver.

-It is also known by the Anglo-Saxon name “feedback”.
