Gap

Door

The gap is the space between the door and the jamb.

Gap is a term whose first meaning recognized by the dictionary of the Royal Spanish Academy ( RAE ) speaks of the opening between the door and the hinge (the sector into which the hinge enters and that allows movement).

By extension, a fissure , a crack or a small crack is known as a crack. For example: “I don't understand: the floor is all wet but I can't find any crack through which the water could have entered” , “The mouse entered the kitchen through the crack in the door” , “The earthquake caused some cracks in the walls, but it did not cause any serious damage.”

Loophole as a trace or opportunity

In some countries , the idea of a gap is used to name the remains , vestiges , footprints or traces of something : “The murderer did not leave any gap in the room” , “There was not even a scrap of the birthday cake” , “The archaeologists managed to reconstruct the building virtually from the gaps found in the ground.”

Loophole, on the other hand, can be an opportunity or a context that is conducive to the development of a mission or the fulfillment of an objective.

Some examples

At the political level, the term loophole is very frequently used with that meaning. Thus, for example, in Spain in March 2016 it was stated that, in order for a government to be formed, there was a loophole so that the leaders of the second and third parties most voted for by citizens could reach an agreement and thus be able to start a new stage with renewed government. The idea alluded to the possible point of understanding between Pedro Sánchez ( PSOE ) and Pablo Iglesias ( Podemos ).

The lawyer of a person accused of having committed a crime, to mention another case, can seek a legal loophole to prevent his client from being imprisoned.

Manifestation

It is often said that former Chilean president Salvador Allende resorted to legal loopholes to nationalize companies.

The legal loopholes used by Salvador Allende

In the same way, it should not be overlooked that when talking about legal loopholes, reference is also usually made to those that different politicians have used to achieve the objectives they had set. Specifically, it is common for them to be associated with the figure of the former president of Chile , Salvador Allende . And it is considered that this president, during his first year in office, chose to use certain loopholes of this type to undertake the nationalization of companies .

In this way, what it was able to do was that, when a large company in the country stopped its production, the government could intervene so that it could produce again. This measure generated great controversy in his country, where it was described by the opposition as illegal but was finally declared legal by the Comptroller General of the Republic .

The hope

Finally, it is often said that certain complicated situations offer a silver lining when there are chances, even if they are minimal, of reversing them.

A soccer team is heading towards relegation but can avoid losing the category if it manages to win the last eight games of the tournament: in this case, it is possible to affirm that there is a silver lining since the team still has mathematical possibilities of saving itself. .
