Rap is a musical style characterized by rhythmic recitation.

Rap is a style of music characterized by a rhythmic recitation of lyrics, which are not sung. Emerging in the United States in the middle of the 20th century , it is a style that is usually associated with the black American population although, today, it transcends borders and cultures.

The action of performing a rap is known as rapping , while the performers are referred to as rappers or with the acronym MC (for Master of ceremony , that is, "Master of ceremony" ). When rapping, the MC relies on a background melody called a beat , which sets the rhythm .

There are numerous rap singers who have managed to become a reference within the aforementioned musical genre. However, among those who have achieved greater success and recognition are the following:

-Eminem (1972). In 1999, this artist rose to stardom, and he has become one of the best sellers in this style. In 1999 was when he began his path to success, which he has maintained to this day despite the fact that controversy has always surrounded him due to certain comments described as sexist, racist or xenophobic. Among their most important singles are “My name is”, “Cleanin out my closet”, “Ass like that” or “We made you”.

-The Langui (1980). In the case of Spain, this singer, leader of the group “La Excepción”, is undoubtedly one of the references for rap lovers. He has five albums on the market, four with the group and one solo, and he even has a Goya Award for the song “El Truco del Manco.”

-Nas (1973). This American is not only considered one of the best rap singers in history but also one of the best composers within that genre, thanks to pieces like “Made you look” or “I Can.”

-Tupac Shakur (1971 – 1996). For many, this, also known as 2Pac, is the best rapper in history, as this is proven, for example, by the fact that he is the artist of that type who has the most albums sold.

Some subgenres

It is important to highlight, however, that there are many subgenres within rap. Some approach rock and pop , such as hardcore rap or pop rap . In these cases, the melodies and themes are closer to the song format that is associated with the aforementioned genres.

Gangsta rap , for its part, is the type of rap that tries to tell about the social problems suffered by the most humble regions. Violence , crime and drugs therefore appear frequently in the lyrics.

Rap in the music industry

Despite having emerged in marginal areas and as an expression of rebellion through combative lyrics, rap progressed until it became a commercial success .

Today it is part of the music industry and moves millions of dollars a year, being a prominent part of the cultural business around the world , but especially in the United States .
