Score is a concept that is used in several Latin American countries to mention the points that an athlete or a team has added within the framework of a competition. Points, in this sense, reflect scores or achievements .
For example: “The Russian gymnast obtained the ideal score in the first stage of the test,” “Our team needs the match to have a low score to have a better chance of winning,” “The Catalan team maintains a perfect score in the league, adding twelve points in four games.”
Different kinds of scores
Scores can have different levels. In the case of tennis , there are different types of points: the points themselves (15, 30, 40), the games or games (from 1 to 6 or 7, depending on the case) and the sets (the accumulation of 6 or 7 points). Whoever wins two or three sets, depending on the type of match , is declared the winner. Therefore, when observing the score of a tennis match we can find various values.
In soccer , goals determine who wins the game. The winning team is awarded three points: the score, therefore, is the accumulation of these points in a standings table.
However, within the field of football, it should not be overlooked that the score not only refers to victories but also to draws. Thus, when two teams achieve the same result , both add one point to their total up to that moment. And this will be reflected in the competition list, where anyone can also consult the number of games won, drawn and lost that their team has obtained.
There are occasions in which the score is determined by a jury , according to what was observed. This happens with rhythmic gymnastics, synchronized swimming and other athletics competitions .
The subjectivity
The notion of score can also be used to rate different things: “Critics gave this film an average score of 8.7 points.”
In the field of culture, such as literature or theater as well as cinema, the score is much more subjective . That is to say, it is up to the tastes, preferences, predisposition and even specific criteria of each person to give a work some points or others, since there is no scale as such.
Hence, a film or a play, for example, may receive a good score from one critic and yet a very bad one from another. And there are many subjective aspects that are considered in the case of art.
Within the educational field, scoring is also widely used. In this case, it is used, for example, to determine the grade that each student has to be able to access a university degree in question. Thus, if a course requires an 8 to enter and someone only has a score of 7.6 , based on their academic record and the tests they have been required to take, they will not be able to study that course.
