Public

Spectators

The people who attend a show constitute the audience of the show in question.

From the Latin publĭcus , the term public is an adjective that refers to that or that which is notorious, manifest, patent, known or seen by everyone . For example: “A public event of such magnitude could not go unnoticed by the president,” “Diego Maradona is a public figure and he should know that his words are always reproduced by the media around the world,” “He had no modesty to undress in public.”

The audience, on the other hand, is the group of people who gather in a certain place for some purpose (usually to attend a show): “The audience filled the theater to listen to the Catalan singer-songwriter,” “The match It was a failure: the audience did not occupy even half of the stadium,” “The members of the play no longer know what to do to attract more audiences to the theater.”

Public reactions

In the case of the performing arts, the public is directly involved in the work and can show their pleasure with a work or with the work of the artists through applause, cheers and ovations. Without forgetting that, in the opposite case, if you do not like what you are seeing you can also react directly by whistling or without applauding at all.

Centuries ago it should be noted that when a theatrical performance took place and the audience did not like what they were seeing, what they did was throw tomatoes at the stage and specifically at the artists who were on the stage.

Hospital

A public hospital is managed by state authorities.

That which belongs to the whole of society

Public is also that which belongs to the entire society or common to the people . It is used as a concept opposed to private. A public hospital , in this sense, is one that is financed with state contributions (that is, with the money that citizens allocate to pay taxes) and that does not have an owner. It can be used, therefore, by anyone.

Public companies are those managed by the State . They differ from private companies, whose capital is in the hands of independent entrepreneurs or investors who do not manage state money.

In a similar sense, public space is that which is open to the entire society, while private space can be closed or managed according to the interests of its owners.

«Público», a digital newspaper

In the same way, it should not be overlooked that in Spain one of the most important digital newspapers that currently exists is called “Público”. In 2007 was when it began its journey on paper. However, the economic crisis led to it finally only being developed through the Internet.

More than five million readers have this publication, which is characterized by dealing with all the topics of a newspaper (politics, culture, society, sports...) under the prism of a progressive, secular and left-wing ideology.

It should not be overlooked either that in Portugal there is also a newspaper called “Público”. National in scope is also the one that began operating in 1990 and arrives daily at kiosks in the country. The Sonae group belongs to those whose main hallmarks are that their texts are very short in length.
