Social program

Old man

A social program aims to solve a problem of the community or a group.

A program can be a list of topics, a plan, a preview of something or a project. Social , for its part, is the adjective that qualifies that which is linked to society (the community of people who maintain interactions and share a culture).

It can be said that a social program is an initiative aimed at improving the living conditions of a population. It is understood that a program of this type is aimed at the entire society or, at least, at an important sector that has certain needs not yet satisfied.

The State and social programs

Most social programs are developed by the State , which has the responsibility of meeting the needs of all people. A government , in this way, can implement plans that seek to guarantee access to education, prevention campaigns to care for health or initiatives to combat child malnutrition.

In this case, there are many and varied social programs that are currently in force in cities around the world. Thus, for example, they have been promoted from those related to housing, so that any citizen can have a decent one, to those related to education.

Social programs can be developed by the State, NGOs or companies.

The case of Spain

Precisely the important value that these programs have means that political parties, when they participate in elections, place special emphasis on making their proposals in this regard known. Thus, for example, in Spain these are the main aspects that stand out in the social programs of the different formations:

-PP: comprehensive family support plan, inclusion plan to end child poverty...

-PSOE: social and political agreement for education in Spain, local health plan, time banks and solidarity banks...

-We can: free daycare, reactivation of the dependency law, specific plan to help victims of gender violence...

-Citizens: increase in the amounts of Social Security benefits per child, advances in personalized care and proximity services for the elderly or people in a situation of dependency...

-Izquierda Unida: democratization of culture and communication, reform of the mechanisms of direct participation of citizens...

Social programs beyond the state orbit

Due to the ineffectiveness of the State , it is common for civil society to promote its own social programs through non-governmental organizations and various types of associations.

Suppose that the authorities of a city intend to reduce the incidence of socially transmitted diseases in the community. To minimize the possibilities of contagion, they promote a social program that consists of the delivery of free condoms and holding public talks through which various specialists explain to people how this type of disease can be prevented.

Another example of a social program appears when an NGO distributes seeds to low-income rural populations and teaches free courses to teach how to grow food.

In addition to all this, it must also be highlighted that different companies also carry out their own social programs. Among them are, for example, banking entities that invest part of their economic potential in the development of concrete actions for those most in need in areas such as education.
