A proclamation is a public expression of a military, political or other nature. The concept also refers to certain advertisements made by an authority . For example: “The rebel group launched a proclamation against the agreement signed by the government with the multinational company” , “In 2006, Fidel Castro presented a proclamation through which he delegated power to his brother Raúl” , “We are going to make our proclamation heard.”
The etymological origin of the term is found in Latin. Specifically, it derives from the verb proclamare , which can be translated as “to say something in front of people” and is made up of the following parts:
- The prefix pro , which is synonymous with “forward” .
- The verb clamare , which is equivalent to “scream” or “ask out loud” .
Proclamations as manifestos
In the context of struggles for independence, revolutions , uprisings or revolts, it is common for the protagonists to develop proclamations. The proclamations, in this sense, are manifestos that explain the reason for the actions and that invite the population to join the cause.
Simón Bolívar , for example, launched his last proclamation in 1830 . The liberator of Colombia and Venezuela then stated that he only aspired to the “glory” of the “consolidation of Colombia” , encouraged his compatriots to “work for the inestimable good of the union” and assured that his “last votes” were for the “ happiness of the country.”
Verb conjugation
Proclaim is also a conjugation of the verb proclaim , which refers to the notification of something out loud or publicly so that others find out. When the verb is applied to a person , it refers to the fact that the subject in question has been invested with an achievement or a position.
An example of this use of the term would be the following: “The Socialist Party proclaims Eugenio Nortilo as its presidential candidate.” In this case, it is mentioned that a political group elected its representative for the presidential elections.
In Spain , one of the most important political and institutional proclamations of recent decades occurred in 2014 when the until then Prince of Asturias became the country's monarch under the name of Felipe VI . Thus, he addressed a proclamation to all citizens from the Congress of Deputies .
Proclamations in the religious sphere
Within the religious sphere, the concept is also used. In this case, it is used to refer to the publication that takes place in the church of the announcement of the upcoming wedding of two people. Specifically, in the temple he realizes the couple's interest in passing through the altar with the clear purpose of letting everyone know and that if anyone has any impediment to "report" it.
This type of proclamation originated in the 12th century and is still maintained, although no longer in the sense of that time. And at that time its use was determined with the aim of preventing marriages from occurring that were not subject to the established laws and canons. Without forgetting that, in the same way, clandestine weddings were avoided.
