Well

Gap

A well is a hole, hole or hole.

A well is a deep hole , hole , vertical tunnel or borehole made in the ground . Such drilling is generally carried out for some specific purpose, such as finding groundwater or oil .

For example: "My aunt lives in a town in the mountains and must drink well water" , "A child fell into a well and was trapped for ten hours before being rescued" , "This province is rich thanks to its oil wells" .

Well characteristics

The wells are usually cylindrical in shape and the walls secured with cement, stone or wood to prevent collapses. The wells that are made to search for water are characterized by the construction of walls that protrude from the ground level (to prevent people from falling inside), the presence of a pulley (to raise the bucket with water) and the use of covers (so that dirt does not enter the well).

Wells have been used to obtain water since the 12th century BC. C. Currently, however, contamination makes well water only suitable for cleaning or gardening, although people who live in the poorest places and far from sewage networks still drink this water.

Likewise, it is necessary that we also take into account the existence of so-called cesspools . These are those that are created next to homes that do not have a sewage system and their mission is to act as a deposit for the entire set of dirty water that is produced in those homes.

Oil exploitation

To obtain oil, very deep wells are drilled.

The concept in the navy

One of the areas that makes most use of the term well is the navy . Thus, for example, in this field it is common to use that word to refer to the hold area that exists on the boat and whose purpose is to store the bomb box.

In the same way, it is also used within the maritime field to refer to the gap that exists in small boats where the live conservation of fish that have been captured through different techniques occurs.

Pits in games

In some card or chance games, the common fund is known as a pot. The pot is the amount of money that is accumulated thanks to the bets and that is destined to the winner of the game: "The bingo in my neighborhood accumulates a pot of more than 20,000 pesos."

In addition to all this, we cannot ignore the important presence of pots in one of the most traditional board games. We are referring to the Goose Game . In this case, any participant who lands on one of those that appear during the course of the board will not be able to leave that square until another player does the same.

The term in colloquial expressions

Finally, we cannot ignore that there are a series of expressions that we use colloquially and that use the term well.

This would be the case of the verbal phrase "fall into a well" , which means that something must be forgotten or secret.
