Definition of

Pepper

Berries

Pepper comes from plants of the Piper genus.

Pepper is a condiment that is used to flavor foods. It is a fruit that comes from plants of the Piper genus, made up of about a thousand species. This means that there is a wide variety of peppers.

At a culinary level, pepper is a dried berry that is generally used ground, although the grain can also be used directly. Its flavor is very spicy , so it is included in small doses to prevent dishes from being strong.

For example: “The cheese we buy in the market has peppercorns inside and the surface covered with different species,” “Would you please pass me the pepper?” I would like to add a little to the meat” , “The sauce had a lot of pepper” .

Benefits of pepper

Many people use pepper almost daily to season the dishes they prepare. The touch it gives to any dish is the reason why they use it, what they may not know is that it is very beneficial for the body. Specifically, it is considered that the advantages that it brings are the following:

  • It promotes digestion and helps eliminate gases.
  • Helps reduce cholesterol levels.
  • No less significant is that it is believed to contribute to reducing the risks of suffering from cancer.
  • It should also be noted that pepper is also very useful when acting as an anti-aging product.
  • It helps, to some extent, to keep the weight at bay.
  • In cases of bronchitis or pneumonia, a traditional home trick consists of applying a pepper poultice to the patient, which is believed to be a wonderful expectorant.
  • In the same way, the natural oil made from pepper is a great tool to relax, to strengthen the heart and even to tone the mind.
Seasoning

It is common for pepper to be used ground.

Classification according to type

Black pepper , green pepper , and white pepper are the most popular peppers. All three come from the same plant ( Piper nigrum ), which is native to Asia . The varieties simply depend on the treatment given to the berry: black pepper is harvested in the middle stage of ripening; green pepper is the unripe berry; and white pepper is the already ripe and shelled grain.

The case of red pepper , also known as cayenne pepper , is curious. This “pepper” does not come from a plant of the genus Piper , but is the condiment obtained by grinding the fruits (already dried) of some species of chili pepper of the genus Capsicum . This powder is called pepper because it shares a similar heat to that generated by Piper beans.

Expressions with the term pepper

We cannot forget either the existence of different expressions that use the word in question. Thus, for example, there is the colloquial verbal phrase l “eat someone pepper” . This is used to indicate that a person has become angry or upset.

On the other hand, there is also “making pepper” . This is used, above all, by the youngest to say that they have voluntarily missed class.
