Pilot

Motoring

A racing driver is a racer who is in control of a car.

Pilot refers to the subject who is in charge of piloting a vehicle . This verb , for its part, is used as a synonym for driving , handling or directing .

Before moving forward we are going to determine the etymological origin of the term. In this case, it must be said that it emanates from the Italian pilot , which means "helmsman" . However, that word, in turn, derives from the Greek pedon , which is synonymous with "helm."

The pilot as a driver

A pilot, therefore, can be the driver of a car, a plane, a boat or other means of transportation . For example: "When I grow up I want to be an airplane pilot and fly around the world" , "The German pilot Sebastian Vettel will start in first place" , "Two pilots fought each other after the race" .

Thus, within motorsport and Formula 1 we can establish that important and recognized drivers have existed and exist. Specifically, among the most awarded are Alain Prost , Michael Schumacher , Ayrton Sena and Fernando Alonso , among others.

Other uses of the term

In some vehicles, such as airplanes, there is what is known as autopilot . This is a device that is responsible for governing the ship on its own, thus allowing the person in command to rest or even ensure that there are no accidents when they are unwell.

Within the field of transportation, similarly, there is also what has been called a position pilot . This is the rear light in cars and its objective is to inform the driver of a car that the vehicle in front of him has one position or another.

It should not be overlooked that pilot is also the name given to some light indicators that certain electronic devices have. Among them are the answering machine pilot or even the iron or refrigerator pilot.

Plane

The airplane pilot controls and directs the aircraft.

The pilot as proof

A pilot, on the other hand, is classified as something that is carried out as a test , experimentally or as a prototype: "This is a pilot initiative that, if successful, will be repeated throughout the country," "We are going to promote a pilot project for non-traditional agriculture» , «The boss said he wants to do a pilot test in the Chilean market: if things go well, we will land there» .

By extension to this last meaning, the first episode of a television program that is recorded so that the station and producers can evaluate the possibility of success before launch is known as a pilot chapter or pilot episode . Typically, a pilot never airs.

The trench coat

In Argentina , finally, pilot is a synonym for gabardine , a garment that is used as protection against rain given its impermeability.

"Today I am going out with a pilot because I suspect that it will rain in the afternoon" is an expression that uses this meaning of the term.
