NATO is the acronym for North Atlantic Treaty Organization.

The North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) is an international political and military organization. In English, it is known as the North Atlantic Treaty Organization or NATO .

NATO was created in 1949 by the signatories of the Treaty of Brussels ( Belgium , France , Luxembourg , the Netherlands and the United Kingdom ), the United States and Canada , along with five other European countries that were invited to participate ( Denmark , Italy , Iceland , Norway and Portugal ). Its founding objective was to dedicate itself to the European organization after the Second World War and in the face of the threat of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics ( USSR ) .

After the constitution of the organization , nine other countries joined. In 1952 , Greece and Turkey joined. Three years later, the Federal Republic of Germany was incorporated. Only in 1982 would Spain join and, in 1999 , the Czech Republic , Hungary and Poland would do the same.

The organization is based in Brussels ( Belgium ), while its military command is located in Mons ( Belgium ).

The internal structure of NATO

The internal structure of this organization features a general secretary, who serves as the highest leader within it, and also a vice secretary. Currently the first position is occupied by the Norwegian J ens Stoltenberg .

In the same way, NATO also has another series of organizations and departments that are fundamental for its development and for the exercise of its activity. Thus, we find the so-called Military Committee, the Supreme Allied Commander of Transformation, the Supreme Allied Commander in the Atlantic and the Supreme Allied Commander in Europe. All this without forgetting the existence of what the regional commands are.

BORN

NATO members have been involved in numerous war conflicts throughout the organization's history.

Your missions

It should be noted that, after the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001 and the US invasion of Afghanistan , NATO has carried out a mission commissioned by the UN that was called the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) . The ISAF also acted in Iraq , although it was limited to training the country's security forces and did not get involved in the war, since many NATO members did not agree with the war promoted by the United States and the United Kingdom. .

In addition to the aforementioned operations, we have to emphasize that other of the most important that NATO has carried out since its inception are, for example, the so-called Deliberate Force during the development of the Bosnian War or the Deny Flight, also during the mentioned war conflict.

To all of them we could add the attacks in Somalia in the early 1990s, the military intervention in Libya in 2011 or the NATO bombing of Yugoslavia in 1999. Operation Allied Force is what it is also called. to this last mentioned action that took place during the Kosovo War.
