Monogamy is the opposite of multiple spouses.

What is monogamy
Monogamy is the type of sentimental bond that does not allow multiple spouses . The members of a monogamous couple, therefore, do not have intimate relationships with other subjects.
It is important to keep in mind that the concept of monogamy can be understood in different ways and that it has even changed over time . At a general level, it can be said that it is a model or regime of sexual and emotional relationships that is based on exclusivity : the monogamous individual maintains a unique bond with his or her partner, refusing to develop the same kind of union or the same actions with other people.

In the case of animals , monogamy implies an exclusive sexual bond in the reproduction and breeding stages. For human beings, the issue is more complex since relationships transcend instinct and procreation.
Western families are usually built on the basis of monogamy. Courtships and marriages unite a man with a woman; to a man with a man; or a woman with a woman: that is, they are based on the formation of a couple ( two members ). In any case, there are those who accept polygamy or polyamory , which breaks with the sexual exclusivity of boyfriends or husbands.
In Western societies, monogamy is the characteristic form of romantic relationship.
Monogamy and nature
The naturalness of monogamy in human beings is a subject of frequent debate. Many maintain that monogamy is not natural but a social construction , derived from a specific cultural, political and economic scheme. In this sense, monogamy would have nothing to do with biological determinations of the species.
Monogamy researchers have come to the conclusion that it began to be established and imposed by humans for several reasons. Specifically, among the most significant we can highlight the following:
-One of the most ancient reasons is that it was the measure that men adopted in groups where there were few females to ensure that they had one. Thus, once they "got" it, they protected and cared for it while ensuring that the babies were theirs.
-In the same way, it is also considered that monogamy was chosen as a way to avoid what were sexually transmitted diseases.
-Another of those reasons was to protect children. Yes, because it was considered that they could take better care of themselves and offer them greater attention within a monogamous couple that was focused on them.
Being able to facilitate the organization of society into family units and even being able to ensure that inheritances will remain with the children of their parents are other reasons that gave rise to monogamy.
