Mesocracy is the social system in which the middle class has preponderance. The term, in fact, can be used directly to name the middle class.
The social group formed by individuals who have an adequate income level to satisfy, to a lesser or greater extent, their material needs is called the middle class . Focusing on this concept is necessary to understand the notion of mesocracy.
As can be seen, in each geographical and historical context , the income margin necessary to determine the limits of the middle class are different. There are many factors that influence this point, such as customs, the characteristics of essential services and the prices of products. For example, it could be indicated that those who earn between 15,000 and 20,000 pesos per month are part of the middle class: those who earn less are in the lower class and those who earn more are in the upper class.
Influence of the middle class
A mesocracy is a society where the middle class exerts a marked influence on the political and cultural life of the nation . This means that the middle class manages to impose its thoughts and customs, although it is important to keep in mind that the class consciousness (see definition below) of this group is low.
It cannot be failed to mention that the middle class includes very diverse social actors : from teachers to architects, including public employees, lawyers, journalists, small businessmen, engineers and merchants. That is why mesocracy does not have a defined ideology and its members often demonstrate conflicting objectives, beyond sharing the desire for progress to reach the upper social stratum.
It is often stated that the development of a country is linked to its degree of mesocracy. The larger the middle class, the greater development, which means that this layer of society functions as an engine of progress .
class consciousness
Class consciousness is the ability of the members of a social class to recognize the antagonistic relationships that determine them or impose conditions on them. It is a concept belonging to Marxism , and also includes the response of each agent once they see their social situation clearly, in the ideological, economic and political spheres.
For example, there is a fundamental antagonism between the bourgeoisie (the upper or wealthy middle class, which dominates the capitalist system) and the proletariat (the lower middle class, who must offer their labor power to get money); the first exploits the second, and understanding this is precisely having class consciousness. If a member of one of these two social classes is not able to recognize such exploitation, alienation takes place, the opposite phenomenon of consciousness .
Mesocrat Party
The Mesocrat Party was created in the context of the Second Spanish Republic and was based on a centrist ideology. It was founded by José de Acuña y Gómez de la Torre , an engineer from Barcelona who lived in Jaén, when the 1936 elections were approaching, after some failed attempts a few years before.
The word mesocracy was the core of this party, since with it it presented its ideology, since it pursued the dominance of the middle class as the basis of its government . Once the elections were over, he managed to join the center Republicans with a position in the deputation, which Acuña himself occupied, after having received almost 136 thousand votes .
It should be noted that these elections were significant for the history of the country, since they were the last of the Second Republic. The Popular Front received the largest number of votes, exceeding 60 percent.
