Boy sitting by a window

The meditative individual is characterized by introspection and reflection.

The adjective meditabundus comes from the Latin word meditabundus . The term is used to refer to someone who thinks, reflects or meditates silently .

Some examples

This term is not very common in everyday speech, where other, less descriptive or precise terms are used. For this reason, let's look at some example sentences to better understand their meaning in context: “My new neighbor is a quiet and brooding man who does not seem willing to establish social ties with those of us who live in the building,” “The young man heard the words of his lawyer and he remained meditative, without answering,” “I notice you are meditative, what are you thinking about?” What are you worried about?” .

Throughout these three sentences we see different situations, in which the state can be more or less frequent . In the first, we talk about a man who is usually brooding, who does not open up easily to the rest of the neighbors in his building, but rather appears as a quiet person. This does not mean that his personality is negative, although from the outside it can be interpreted as cold or distant, but that in his nature there is the need to think, to analyze things for longer than the rest, and to prioritize this state over that of the conversation.

The second, on the other hand, has as its protagonist a boy who is not usually brooding, but enters this state after the statements of his interlocutor. Could it be that he gave her bad news? Perhaps it told you about a great opportunity, or a situation that requires reflection and a cool mind before making a decision. Therefore, regardless of each person's personality, we can all achieve moments of silence and deep thought, to connect with ourselves and maintain an internal conversation before returning to the outside world.

In the last example, the sender asks his interlocutor if something is happening to him because he notices that he is meditating. Once again, we can understand that he is not usually quiet and thoughtful, but that this is an exceptional situation . With everything we have said above, it is clear that the only option is not that something negative has happened to you, but that you may simply be going through a moment of introspection to contemplate an important issue, which you want to calmly observe before moving on to the action.

Reflection and musing

A meditative person usually dedicates himself to reflecting or ruminating . Someone is said to be brooding when said attitude or tendency is frequent or repeated on a recurring basis. On the other hand, an individual may be brooding over a particular circumstance, without that being his or her usual behavior.

Let's take the case of an elderly man who is characterized by being self-absorbed and not very talkative . This man is usually described as meditative : he usually remains silent, absorbed in his thoughts . He never speaks lightly nor makes decisions before extensive internal deliberation.

Girl about to cross the street

From the outside, the meditative person appears to be disconnected from the outside world.

A boy, on the other hand, can stand out for his talkativeness and impetuosity. However, one afternoon he is surprised after having a talk with his father, where he learns about several family issues. Therefore, in the face of these revelations, in the following days the young man appears meditative , as if processing the new information .

Being or being meditative, in short, is neither positive nor negative. It is a condition or a trait that can be part of the personality or emerge in certain contexts. It is not something, therefore, intrinsically good or bad. However, in society we always encounter judgment of our traits, both physical and character, and it is possible to receive criticism for being brooding, but also for being extroverted.
