Boat

Collective boat

This type of passenger boat works like a bus

Boat is a term that comes from the Portuguese language , although its most distant etymological antecedent is found in the Malay word lánčār (which can be translated as “fast” ). A light boat that can have different characteristics is called a boat.

Types of boats

The so-called aid boat , in this framework, functions as support . It is usually used to carry passengers from the main ship to the coast or vice versa.

A collective boat , meanwhile, is used for public transportation . These boats usually provide a service with different stops along their route , like a bus (bus).

Rubber boats or inflatable boats are usually called inflatable boats . In this case, the structure of the vessel is flexible and contains pressurized gas . When the boat is not inflated, it can be easily stored and moved.

At the military level there are several types of boats. The fast attack boats have torpedoes and missiles for the development of offensive missions. Landing craft , meanwhile, are used to transport equipment, vehicles and soldiers from the sea to the shore.

Fast attack boat

The fast attack boat does not stand out for its size, since it can displace between 100 and 800 tons , but it does stand out for its speed, which reaches 40 knots . This is because their goal is offense. As with other concepts, this one is not always defined in the same way, but can also be used as a synonym for gunboat , torpedo boat or missile boat .

Their small size usually limits these vessels to operations near the coast and in relatively calm waters. Although the first warships with gasoline engines and capable of reaching high speeds were built in the mid-19th century, it was not until the 20th century that fast attack boats themselves appeared.

Landing craft

The complement of the previous one is the aforementioned landing craft, which are used in the context of an amphibious assault , an offensive operation in which sea units approach the coast to dispatch armed troops to solid ground, with a capacity of 3000 or more tons in the strongest ones.

Collective boat

It is important to add that the collective boat makes relatively short trips, in a radius that can fall into the category of "vicinities" (a surrounding or nearby place). The route may or may not be urban and have a variable number of stops. The latter can be scheduled on demand , something very useful for those who want a direct trip from one point to another, like taxis work, although in this case we usually talk about a ferry or ferry .

In fact, when the trip is configured by the passenger, the term water taxi is also preferred, while the collective boat is more similar to the bus, with its own itinerary that is not controlled by the clients. These means of transportation exist in various parts of the world, including some countries in Europe and Latin America, as well as the United States. In Venezuela, for example, it is known as tapaíto .

motor boat

A boat can be a boat equipped with a motor or sail and rowing . They are often taken aboard large ships and boats to transport people and cargo inside ports or between places close to the coast.

Other meanings

There are other meanings of boat recognized by the Royal Spanish Academy ( RAE ) that have nothing to do with boats. The term can refer to a large, flat, smooth stone or to a fungus that affects potatoes and other crops .
