Kiosk

Pavilion

A kiosk is a pavilion located in a park, garden or other green space.

Kiosk is a term that the Royal Spanish Academy (RAE) accepts as equivalent to kiosk . The concept, until reaching our language , has come a long way: the word from the Pelvi language kōšk passed into the Persian košk , then arrived in Turkish as köşk and later led to the French kiosque .

Just as its etymological journey is varied, the meanings of kiosk are also numerous. It may be a pavilion that, located in a green space, is used to hold various events. In this sense, what a kiosk allows is to prevent people from being exposed to the sun's rays or precipitation, since they have a roof.

Types of kiosks

Currently, the use of a kiosk usually refers to a type of booth that, installed in a public space, is used to sell certain products . Thus, when in Argentina we simply talk about a kiosk, we usually mention the place where sweets, chocolates , soft drinks, cigarettes and other products are sold. For example: “I'll be back in five minutes: I'm going to the kiosk to buy a beer,” “When I was a teenager, I worked for five years running a kiosk,” “Every time I pass by a kiosk, I can't help but buy a package of cookies.” chocolate" .

In cities with a large tourist influx, even in these kiosks you can find everything from flags of the country in which they are located to souvenir items from the cities, including lottery tickets.

Newspaper sales

The stall dedicated to selling newspapers is also called a kiosk.

A newsstand

A newsstand , also known as a newsstand or newsstand , is a business that, located on the sidewalk, offers newspapers and magazines for sale. These kiosks receive the publications directly from the printer: “Can you go to the kiosk to find out if the newspaper Crónicas del sur has arrived?” , “I was reading a sports magazine at my uncle's kiosk: it seems that Barcelona wants to hire a new reinforcement.”

Precisely the fact that in countries like Spain , when the term kiosk is used, it refers to the small space that exists on the street to buy newspapers, has led to the emergence of a space on the Internet that responds to that name precisely: “Kiosk” . This is a website where the user can have access to endless media from around the world.

The site is mainly specialized in the Spanish press, which can be accessed through general newspapers ( “El País” , “ABC” , “El Mundo” …), sports publications ( “Marca” , “AS” ) , economic newspapers ( “Expansión” , “Cinco Días” ) and even regional newspapers, such as “La Voz de Galicia” or “El Correo” , among others.

However, “Kiosco” also has the possibility of keeping up to date with what is published in the media in the United States , Latin America , Europe , Asia and Africa .

“El Kiosco” children's program

Within the field of television, we can establish that in Spain , in the 1980s , there was a very successful children's program that was also called “El Kiosco” .

Specifically, it was broadcast between 1984 and 1987 , in the afternoons, and was presented by Verónica Mengod and a friendly doll that responded to the name of Pepe Soplillo .
