Definition of

unusual

Improbable

Something implausible can be mentioned as unusual.

Unusual is an adjective that is used to describe something unusual, strange or little used . The unusual, therefore, is something uncommon .

For example: “This furniture manufacturer offers unusual designs that manage to surprise consumers” , “The model exhibited an unusual hair color for her” , “It was an unusual storm”.

Characteristics of the unusual

Everything that is strange, extravagant or implausible can be described as unusual (a term that comes from the Latin inusitātus ).

If it snows in Patagonia , no one could claim that it is a surprising phenomenon since, due to the climatic conditions and geographical location of the region, snowfall is common in winter. On the other hand, if it snows in cities like Montevideo or Buenos Aires , we will be facing something unusual since it does not usually happen.

Strange

The strange is unusual.

The concept in art

In art it is common to use the term unusual. And, on many occasions, painters, sculptors or photographers opt to create a rare - that is, unusual - version of one of the best works of all time.

Thus, for example, in recent decades we have been able to see how Rodin 's sculpture of “The Thinker” has had the most unique reproductions. Good examples of this are photographs such as the one taken by John Lund in which the protagonist who reflects is an elephant or the snapshot taken by the Honda company within an advertising campaign in which the thinker is a robot.

Continuing within art, we have to establish that there have been professionals who, at the time and even today, consider themselves authors of totally unusual works and concepts. An example of this is the Italian artist Piero Manzoni (1933 – 1963), who rose to fame for a work as strange as the one titled “Artist's Shit.”

This work consisted of a total of 90 cans, measuring 5 x 6.5 centimeters, which were filled with their own excrement. With that, what I intended was to make a forceful and firm criticism of the assessment that was made of art in general at that time.

Although it may seem very unusual, this work managed to sell for a very high price and currently, some of its cans are exhibited in such important centers as the MOMA in New York .

Other uses of the notion of unusual

In a person who is characterized by his parsimony and tranquility, an impulsive and intense attitude will be considered unusual. This could be the case if the subject in question responds with shouts or insults to a question or if he hits another person in the middle of a fit of rage.

Unusual can also be something extraordinary (in the sense of greater than usual in quality, quantity or size) or something gigantic . If the Venezuelan soccer team qualifies for a Soccer World Cup , it could be said that it is an unusual achievement since, until now, the team has never achieved this goal. The same could not be said of Argentina or Brazil , South American teams that are regular hosts of world soccer championships.
