Definition of

Intellectual

Thought

An intellectual person dedicates his time to science or literature.

The etymological origin of the intellectual term that concerns us now is found in Latin. And this is demonstrated by the fact that it is made up of three components of said language: the prefix “inter”, which is synonymous with “between”; the word “lectus”, which can be translated as “read”, and finally the suffix “-al”, which is equivalent to “relationship”.

Intellectual allows reference to that belonging to or relating to understanding . For example: “This problem is intellectual, it cannot be solved with force,” “I don't feel like making an intellectual effort when I go to the movies,” “Students show serious intellectual shortcomings when they don't read from a young age.”

The adjective intellectual, therefore, is usually used in opposition to the corporal or physical , appearing therefore associated with the spiritual or symbolic. If it is said that something must be solved intellectually, it is being stated that its solution will only be found through thought and reflection . Therefore, it does not matter what physical force is applied in this regard.

The intellectual person

An intellectual, on the other hand, is known as a person who is dedicated to literature and science . These subjects invest their time in the study of reality and in reflecting on social problems.

Intellectuals, in this way, form a social collective that tries to educate the population, propose debates and explain certain phenomena. In this sense, it is argued that intellectuals have a moral duty to encourage critical reflection .

Great writers and scientists

Throughout History there have been many intellectuals who have contributed their ideas and works to the world of culture, literature or science. However, among the most significant of recent decades are, for example, the writers Umberto Eco, Mario Vargas Llosa or Gabriel García Márquez as well as the scientist J. Craig Venter.

For Marxism , an organic intellectual is one who, despite belonging to a higher class, is committed to the condition of the lower classes and works for the liberation of the dispossessed.

Comprehension

The concept of intellectual can be linked to understanding.

Intellectual property

In addition to all this, it should be noted that, in recent years, what is known as intellectual property registration has gained special prominence. It is an institution in which authors, editors or translators of any type of artistic, literary or scientific work register their works with the clear objective of ensuring the rights they have in this regard.

In this sense, it is closely related that the authorities of different countries in the world have seen the need to enact intellectual property laws to confront the phenomenon of piracy. In this way, with those we not only try to ensure the rights of the authors of the different works but also to recognize the economic remuneration that corresponds to them for them.

Measurement of cognitive abilities

The IQ , finally, is the number resulting from a standardized test that measures the cognitive abilities of a human being in relation to their age group.

According to these tests, the higher the IQ, the greater the cognitive abilities. In any case, IQ cannot be associated with intelligence directly, especially since there are multiple types of abilities.
