Immaturity is evidenced when a person behaves as if they were younger than they are.

Determining the etymological origin of the term immaturity is very important in order to fully understand its meaning. Therefore, we will have to go to Latin to be able to find where it comes from. And it comes from the union of several parts of said language:

• The prefix “in-“, which is used to show a negation.

• The word “maturus”, which can be translated as “good or mature”.

• The suffix -ez, which indicates “quality”.

What is immaturity

Immaturity is the lack of maturity . This term (maturity) is linked to good sense, prudence or good judgment; at the age of that human being who has reached vital fullness but has not yet reached old age ; or at the season of the fruits.

For example: “Your immaturity does not allow you to see what the key to the issue is” , “Juan believes that the problem arose from the immaturity of his son” , “Taking into account the immaturity of these fruits, we are going to have to look for another food" .

It is often said that an individual with immaturity suffers from Peter Pan syndrome.

The adjective immature is usually used to refer to a person who acts as if they were younger than they are. That is the case of a 30-year-old man who has the same behaviors as an 18-year-old teenager, or a 20-year-old woman who shares behaviors with a 14-year-old woman.

Javier is 34 years old, married and has a 12-year-old son, named Martín . It is assumed that Javier is already a trained and mature man, who must guide and educate Martín responsibly. However, he always fights with the boy for playing PlayStation . When Martín doesn't let him play, Javier gets angry and in a bad mood. His wife, therefore, often accuses him of immaturity.

Characteristics of someone with immaturity

There are many characteristics that indicate that a person has immaturity. However, among the most significant are the following:

• He does not know himself well, that is, he does not know what his virtues, his defects or the limits he is capable of reaching are.

• He is not able to correctly grasp his life or his surroundings.

• He suffers constant changes in mood and mood, because he does not have stability on an emotional level.

• It is not responsible and also does not commit.

• Shows little ability to cope with setbacks and adversities.

• He is improvising in his life because he does not have a plan for the future.

• He is a bad loser.

• They do not have emotional maturity, that is, they do not live a relationship in a selfless way, in which they care about the other person or what they need.

• Presents difficulties in being able to argue a position or even in reasoning about the facts that he or she has to face.

• He is a bad loser.

• Is not able to adequately tolerate frustrations.

Immaturity can be seen at all stages of life. An 11-year-old child who still sleeps in the same bed as his parents and who does not attend birthday parties because he wants to be close to his mother all day will be showing signs of immaturity.
