Unsuccessful

Mistake

What is fruitless can be useless or vain.

The first thing we are going to do before entering fully into the meaning of the term fruitless is to proceed to know its etymological origin. In this case, we can emphasize that it is a word that derives from Latin, exactly emanating from infructuosus , which can be translated as "useless" and that is the result of the sum of several components of said language:

-The prefix in- , which is used to indicate negation. That's why it means "no" or "without."

-The noun fructus , which is synonymous with “fruit”.

-The suffix -osus , which is used to indicate “abundance”.

Concept of unsuccessful

Unfruitful is an adjective that is used to describe something that is unproductive or useless .

In addition to what has already been mentioned, we have to state that the term fruitless has among its synonyms fruitless, ineffective, infertile or even vain. On the contrary, among its antonyms we find words such as fruitful, effective, fruitful, fertile or productive, for example.

When an action is not sufficient to achieve an objective or to fulfill a goal , it can be marked as fruitless. For example: “The dialogue with the government was unsuccessful and that is why the union decided to resume forceful measures to demand better working conditions” , “Unsuccessful search for a woman who has been missing for eight days” , “All efforts of the doctors were unsuccessful."

Mistake

A fruitless effort is one that does not give the expected result.

The useless or ineffective

What is fruitless, in some cases, is useless . Suppose a young man is preparing dinner for his girlfriend: in the middle of the process he gets distracted and ends up burning the food. The boy carries out various tasks to try to save the preparation, but he is unsuccessful and must throw it away. It can be said, in this way, that his attempts were fruitless since he finally had to throw away the food.

In other contexts, fruitlessness is associated with a lack of effectiveness or productivity . Take the case of an American basketball player who is hired as a foreign reinforcement by a Uruguayan team. The club hopes that the basketball player will become one of the team's scorers. However, the North American barely managed an average of 1.8 points per game in the five games he played before being fired. Given this reality, it could be stated that this athlete had an unsuccessful time with the team in question.

Book «Unfruitful Geography»

In the same way, we cannot ignore that one of the works of the great Chilean writer Pablo Neruda (1904 – 1973) has in its title the term that concerns us now. We are referring to the book “Unfruitful Geography” . It is a work that was published in 1972 , shortly after he received the Nobel Prize for Literature , and it addresses some important topics that worried the aforementioned author, such as, for example, death.

It is a collection of poems that also addresses issues such as nature, feelings, suffering and even illness.
