Indomitable

IndomitableThe Latin word indomĭtus arrived in Spanish as indómito . This adjective is used to describe someone who cannot be tamed, repressed or controlled .

For example: “The indomitable journalist never gave in to the pressures of the powerful or the impositions of his editors” , “The actress with an indomitable character caused a revolution in the film industry of the 1950s” , “Despite the weapons of the conquerors, the aboriginal people maintained their indomitable spirit and did not stop rebelling.”

The verb tame is usually used to refer to the process of retaining, controlling and taming an animal . An untamed horse , in this framework, is one that has not yet been subdued and that, therefore, does not obey man.

Taming, on the other hand, can also refer to the containment or repression of a person's behaviors and attitudes that are considered inappropriate or improper. If someone does not allow themselves to be controlled, they are classified as untamed.

Take the case of a singer recognized for his talent and famous for his rebellion. This artist usually does not pay attention to the instructions of his record company, he fights with his bandmates and even has frequent confrontations with his audience. However, it continues to fill stadiums and sell thousands of records. That is why those around him tolerate him being untamed, since he continues to generate profits, while he takes advantage of that situation to act freely and do what he wants.

Throughout the different examples, we can see that the term untamed can be interpreted in different ways, some positive and others, not so much. When we talk about the indomitable spirit , we are referring to freedom from external influences, especially negative ones, with the purpose of moving forward on our path and achieving our goals.

The martial art known as taekwondo , created in Korea in 1955, is based on five principles that seek to teach its students the most favorable way to make fair use of their knowledge. It is about achieving a degree of honesty, sincerity and compassion that accompanies the technique , and to do so it is necessary to master the following formula: courtesy, integrity, perseverance, self-control and indomitable spirit .

IndomitableLearning taekwondo does not mean acquiring good physical condition and memorizing a series of fighting movements to go out and put them into practice against our enemies spontaneously, but rather accessing knowledge that gives us the power to defend ourselves and protect others. other than any act of injustice when we have exhausted diplomatic channels. Knowing how to hit with technique and precision does not mean you have to do it as soon as the opportunity presents itself.

In this framework, the concept of indomitable spirit refers to a kind of shield against the temptation of injustice, against the influence of those who wish to divert us from our path and to do so try to "tame" our will. Every time a taekwondo student faces injustice he must place himself in a position of balance, right at the center point of the five principles mentioned above.

Courtesy will allow you to treat even your enemies well. Integrity should be one of the main goals in your life. Perseverance helps you get up after every fall. Self-control prevents excessive or unnecessary use of physical force. The indomitable spirit rebounds negative energy and preserves everything learned.

The idea of untamed, finally, appears in different works. The novel “Tarzán el indómito” ( “Tarzan the Untamed” in its original language) by Edgar Rice Burroughs and the poem “Purén indómito” by the chronicler of the Indies Diego Arias de Saavedra are two examples.
