Indigenous is someone originating from the country in question. The concept, coming from the Latin indigĕna , refers to the original settler of the territory they inhabit.
For example: "This natural park is protected by the indigenous people of the area" , "Three Chaco indigenous people protest in front of the Government House to claim land" , "The indigenous people only approach the town when they need to go to the hospital" .
For a population to be considered indigenous, it must be proven that its establishment in the territory in question precedes that of other peoples (such as the case of indigenous Americans versus Europeans or their descendants) and that its presence is stable and prolonged.
The indigenous people of America
There are several concepts that, depending on the context, are used as synonyms for indigenous, such as aboriginal , native people or even Indian (due to Christopher Columbus ' confusion when he first arrived in America ). In the most common sense, the term indigenous is used in reference to ethnic groups that maintain non-European cultural traditions.
In this sense, we would have to refer, therefore, to what is known as indigenous people of America , which, as its name indicates, is a term used to refer to the original settlers of that continent as well as to the entire group of their descendants. Specifically, to the descendants who have opted to maintain their culture , their way of life or even their most ancient traditions.
Amerindians, indians onative americans son algunos de esos indígenas de America que poblaron esas tierras y que actualmente siguen existiendo en zonas muy concretas de aquellas.
Signs of identity
Of all of them, it is worth highlighting the following hallmarks , which show their essence, their way of being and their values:
- These indigenous people have their origins in a series of Siberian hunters who came to America with the clear objective of settling in a new place as a result of having lost their home as a result of the last ice age.
- The discovery of America , by Christopher Columbus, was the starting point of a significant reduction of indigenous peoples. And some of the colonizers not only opted for the evangelization of those but also subjected them to forced labor and made the decision to end their ways of life.
- There are diverse indigenous people who have existed and exist on the American continent. All of them differ in terms of the way they dress, collect, speak and even interact or dance.
indigenous peoples
Indigenous peoples usually have a type of social organization that predates the modern State and belong to cultures that managed to survive the globalization that imposed the European lifestyle on almost the entire world.
It is common for indigenous people to be a minority within a national State with European characteristics and to organize themselves according to their cultural and religious criteria.
It should be noted that certain peoples, such as the Chinese, Arabs or Jews, maintain cultural patterns that predate European expansion, although they are not considered indigenous.
