Latin is where we can establish that the etymological origin of the term misfit is found. Specifically, it must be stated that it is the result of the sum of these lexical components:
-The prefix “in-”, which means “no” or “without”.
-The prefix “ad-”, which is used to indicate “approach”.
-The verb “aptare”, which is synonymous with “adjust” or “gird”.
Misadapted is an adjective that is used to describe someone who cannot adapt to certain scenarios, contexts or environments . The verb adapt, in turn, refers to adapt, agree or adapt .
This means that someone who is maladjusted cannot adjust or accommodate themselves to a certain environment or circumstance. For example: “Biographers claim that the German mathematician was a misfit who did not get along with his colleagues or the authorities,” “A misfit interrupted the play with shouts and insults against the government,” “The police reported that "The main suspect in the crime is a social misfit who had problems with his neighbors."
Among the synonyms of the term in question, we can highlight that there are words such as disambiguated, marginalized, displaced or decentred. On the contrary, among its antonyms we find others such as adapted, set or centered, for example.
In general, the idea of misfit is usually used to name someone who follows their own rules. These people, therefore, do not conform to current norms or standards , but rather act according to their interests or tastes.
A man who lives off crime and is violent can be classified as a misfit, since his behavior does not comply with what is established by law. In a society, coexistence is regulated by legislation: that is why if a subject dedicates himself to systematically violating the laws, he is a misfit who is not willing to live in harmony with the rest of the people.
Sometimes, the notion of misfit is linked to rebellion or not following the predominant criteria . A writer who does not respect the instructions of publishers , lacks a literary agent, gets along poorly with other authors and opts for experimental poetry can be marked as a misfit.
In the same way, we cannot ignore that “Inadaptados” is the title of the first album by the rock group Cicatriz, led by Natxo Etxebarría. This one, of Basque origin, began its journey in 1986 and thanks to that album it managed to become a benchmark within its genre as well as the most awarded album of its entire career.
It includes songs such as “This will turn out well”, “Today in a home”, “Be careful bureaucrats” and the one that gives its title: “Inadaptados”.
Likewise, the Spanish writer Carmen de Burgos (1867 – 1932) has among her most important works one titled “Los inadaptados”, which was published in 1909. It tells the story of how a small town in Almeria sees its routine broken. and tranquility when a ship loaded with oranges shipwrecks on its beaches.
