The first step we are going to take before delving fully into the meaning of the term ice cream is to know its etymological origin. In this case, we have to emphasize that it is a word that derives from Latin, exactly from the adjective “gelidus”, which is synonymous with “very cold”.

The concept of ice cream has several uses. As an adjective , it can be used to refer to something that has a lower temperature than usual or that is very cold .

FrozenFor example: “This coffee is iced! I can't drink it like that” , “When we got to the hotel room, we noticed that it was freezing: the heating was not working” , “I'm going to look for a coat for the child who is freezing” .

Glacial, icy, frozen or cold are some of the words that can be synonymous with ice cream. On the contrary, its antonyms include others such as hot, warm, hot, temperate, or fiery, among others.

In the same way, we cannot ignore that the term in question is used on many occasions to give titles to works of all kinds. A good example of this would be the novel “The Frozen Heart”, which was published in 2007 and which won the José Manuel Lara Prize in 2008.

The writer Almudena Grandes is the author of this book that is divided into three parts: The heart, The ice and The frozen heart. The story begins with the death of Julio Carrión, a man who has managed to amass a great fortune thanks to his businesses and who lived important experiences during the Civil War and with the Blue Division.

At his funeral, one of his sons, Álvaro, is surprised by the presence of a young woman, Raquel, whom he does not know. A woman who is the daughter and granddaughter of exiles in France and who has a memory from her childhood that she wants to know in depth: the visit she made one afternoon with her grandfather to some strangers with whom she seemed to have outstanding debts.

The most frequent use of ice cream, however, is found as a noun . Ice cream is a frozen food , usually sweet, usually made with fruit juice or milk or cream .

Ice cream can combine multiple ingredients. They are often sweetened with sugar or sweeteners and may contain various flavorings. In addition, it is common to add pieces of chocolate, nuts, cookies or fruits .

Although the terms vary according to the country, broadly speaking, a distinction can be made between creamy ice cream (also called cream ice cream or frozen cream ) and water ice cream (or water ice cream ). Creamy ice cream is prepared with a certain percentage of fat; Water ice cream, for its part, is dairy-free. Other types of ice cream are slushies and sorbets .

It is also possible to differentiate between artisanal ice cream and industrial ice cream . Artisanal ice cream is produced with fresh ingredients and without preservatives, artificial colors or flavors. Industrial ice cream, on the other hand, is made in large plants with stabilizers, flavorings and colorings.
