Taste is the sense that allows us to perceive flavor.

Taste is the bodily sense that allows us to perceive chemical substances dissolved in saliva . This sense gives the sensation of flavor, which can be divided into four main types: sweet (like sugar), salty (salt), acid (citrus) and bitter (beer). Some theorists recognize the existence of a fifth taste: umami .

Taste, a term from the Latin gustus , is linked to smell , since the smell of food affects the perception of flavor. That is why when a person has a cold they usually feel that food is tasteless (flavorless).

The sense of taste helps digestion : receiving a pleasant sensation stimulates the secretion of saliva and gastric juices, key elements for digesting food. The taste buds found on the tongue constitute the main promoter of the sense of taste.

A taste or an appreciation

Let's start by analyzing good taste . It is an appreciation that varies according to social and cultural conventions, but also according to the particular customs of each person. It is known that in some parts of the world it is normal to touch food directly with your hands, without using cutlery; Transferring this custom to Western countries would be very difficult, given that it is a situation that opposes the concept of good taste that has been imprinted in the unconscious of its inhabitants for generations.

Likewise, finding yourself in a country with such customs and refusing to act like others may be considered rude. Human beings are not always aware that normality is part of a structure created by other people, and not of nature itself. Good taste is subject to the needs and convictions of each person, as well as its limit: bad taste.

For a forensic doctor, examining a decomposed corpse while drinking your coffee and eating a croissant may seem like the most normal, everyday combination in the world; However, the mere visualization of such a picture can be a nightmare scene for a person outside of medicine.

Set of engaging activities

Taste also represents the set of activities that attract a living being and that do not seem to choose. For example, when you taste your (future) favorite food for the first time, something happens inside you that leads you to classify it as such and try to consume it whenever you can for the rest of your life .

This happens to all animals, and it is also appreciated during moments of leisure: each dog finds a particular game especially fun, just as much as people do, and there is nothing we can do to avoid it. As long as a taste does not deprive another being of its freedom, it should not be questioned or sanctioned by anyone.
