Golfer in full swing

Golf is a well-known sport that dates back to the 15th century.

Golf is a sport in which competitors must hit a ball with a club and put it into different holes according to a pre-established route. The winner is the golfer who completes the route with the fewest strokes .

The golf course

A golf course consists of a series of holes, each with a designated area called a green , made of short, carefully maintained grass. Each hole begins at an area designated as the tee box , or simply the tee . Players place their ball on the tee and hit it toward the fairway (the portion between the tee and the green ) to start the hole.

The fairway is also often covered in short grass. This is the area where players try to make their way to the green. The rough is the area of longer, less-kept grass surrounding the fairway. It can be more difficult to play there due to the height of the grass and the possible presence of denser vegetation. There are also bunkers , sand-filled spaces that are designed to present a challenge.

Hitting the ball into a bunker often carries increased difficulty due to the texture of the sand and the need to get over the edge. Some golf courses feature water hazards , such as ponds or streams, that players must avoid when hitting their shots. These add an additional element of strategic challenge.

In situations where a ball is lost or is located in an unfavourable playing area (for example, in a bush or in a body of water), it is possible to take a drop : placing a new ball in a specific position, according to the rules . On each green , there is a flag placed on the hole, which helps to visualise its location from a distance and provides a visual reference.

Golf clubs

Each player has several clubs available, each with different shaft lengths and head angles, so you can choose the one that best suits the distance the ball must travel to reach the hole.

While the activity is taking place, the clubs are carried in a bag , which is carried by the golfer's assistant, who is known as a caddie .

History

Golf is a sport that dates back several centuries and has its origins in Scotland. Although an exact date of its inception cannot be determined, it is believed to have existed in various forms since the 15th century . In its early days, golf was not played as we know it today, but involved hitting a ball with a club across an open field towards a specific target.

The early game consisted of getting the ball from a starting point to a hole in the ground in as few strokes as possible. Greens were natural areas with short grass where the holes were located. As the game evolved, natural and artificial obstacles began to be created on the ground, which added an element of strategy and difficulty.

Golf hole and flag

There is a reference flag next to each hole.

As it gained popularity, golf clubs were founded in Scotland, the most famous being the Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St. Andrews , dating from 1754. St. Andrews is considered one of the birthplaces of modern golf and is still an iconic course that attracts players from around the world.

In the 19th century, golf spread beyond Scotland, reaching England and then other European countries and the United States. Over time, the sport became more accessible to a wider audience. Major tournaments were established, attracting top players from around the world and raising the profile of golf globally . Today, it is played all over the world, by both amateur and professional players.
