Before entering fully into the meaning of the term acrobatic gymnastics, we are going to proceed to know the etymological origin of the two words that give it shape:

Gymnastics , first of all, derives from Greek, specifically gymnós , which can be translated as “naked.” And this is how Greek gymnasts practiced sports.

Acrobatic , secondly, we have to explain that it is a word that also derives from Greek. In its case we can establish that it is the result of the sum of three lexical components of said language: the noun akros , which can be translated as "height"; the verb bainein , which is synonymous with "walk", and the suffix -tica , which is used to indicate "relative to". In this way, its meaning is "related to exercises that are performed by walking on wires or ropes at a certain height."

The activity that is developed to optimize and maintain a healthy physical state through exercises is called gymnastics . This notion also refers to the set of movements that are executed with that objective. Acrobatic , for its part, is that which is linked to acrobatics : an activity that involves the implementation of balance, contortion and jumping skills, among others.

Acrobatic gymnastics is a gymnastic discipline based on routines that must present turns , jumps and displays of balance and flexibility . The exercises are performed by teams of between two and six athletes, whose movements must be coordinated and harmonious.

Development of the activity

The track where acrobatic gymnastics is practiced is similar to that used in artistic gymnastics . Although the duration of the routine depends on each category, generally the exercises last about 150 seconds.

It is common for gymnasts to perform human pyramids or hold each other in acrobatic gymnastics (also called acrosport ). Depending on the position adopted in the exercise, the athlete can be a bearer (provides support, acting as a base), agile (climbs on the bearer), assistant (assists the bearer and the agile one) or observer (analyzes the armed figure to indicate how to improve it).

The routines

The performance of an acrobatic gymnastics routine consists of three main stages. First is the moment of assembly , where the figure is organized and put together. Once achieved, the maintenance comes, which must take place for 3 or more seconds. Finally the disassembly takes place.

Communication between the agile and the bearer is essential in acrobatic gymnastics since, in this way, the risk of injury is minimized. Both gymnasts must talk to correct postures or even to undo a figure in case of pain.
