Gem therapy

Plant therapy

Gem therapy proposes treatments with embryonic plant tissues.

The notion of gem therapy is formed with the Latin word gemma (which can be translated as "yolk" ) and with the compositional element -terapia (which refers to a "treatment" ). The medical use of embryonic plant tissues is called gem therapy.

At this point it is important to clarify that, in gem therapy, the yolk does not refer to the yellow part of the egg of an oviparous animal . The meaning of bud that is of interest here refers to the embryonic sprout of a plant , formed by the leaf structures that will later give rise to flowers, leaves and branches.

What does gem therapy consist of?

It should be noted that the dictionary of the Royal Spanish Academy ( RAE ) recognizes the use of the concept of gem therapy in the field of medicine . However, it is often stated that gem therapy falls within the so-called alternative medicine due to the lack of scientific evidence on its effectiveness.

At a general level, it can be said that gem therapy relies on treatments with shoots , buds, inflorescences, seeds and new tissues of the specimens. These elements are collected when germination occurs, which is intended to contain the greatest possible amount of enzymes, hormones, vitamins and nutrients.

Gem therapy is usually used with the intention of detoxifying the body when the organs responsible for eliminating waste do not function normally. Many times gem therapy is part of a treatment framed in homeopathy .

Gem

The use of gems and crystals to improve health is known as gem therapy or crystal therapy.

Gem treatment

There is another use of the idea of gem therapy that does not have to do with plant buds, but with gems , stones or crystals . That is why this particular discipline is also mentioned as crystal therapy .

Considered part of alternative medicines, gem therapy or crystal therapy is based on the supposed healing power of amethyst , opal and other minerals .

Those who defend this practice maintain that there is a correspondence between the physical properties of the stones and the ailments they can cure. Usually the sessions are based on supposed vibrational energies that could affect people's bodies.

Gem therapy, a pseudoscience

As we indicated above, gem therapy is generally not endorsed by academies, scientific institutions or state organizations. The OMC Observatory (Spanish Collegiate Medical Organization) against Pseudosciences, Pseudotherapies, Intrusion and Health Sects , for example, includes gem therapy among energy- based pseudosciences.

According to this entity, gem therapy or crystal therapy consists of placing gems in different areas of the body to "harmonize" or "recover" the energy level that a human being requires to feel healthy. The promoters of gem therapy ensure that crystals have their own energy field that can operate in the human body.

For the OMC Observatory , gem therapy lacks scientific support, making it impossible to demonstrate its clinical validity and effectiveness. This discipline , the organization continues, is used by "charlatans" who seek to achieve economic gain through "deception."

It must be clarified, however, that the use of crystals and gems in terms of health dates back to Antiquity . As for the possible benefits of therapy, some doctors accept them but attribute them to a placebo effect .
