Border

Cordillera

A mountain range can serve as a border between two countries.

A border is a conventional line that marks the boundary of a State . Borders can be delimited physically (with walls or fences ), although this is not always the case. That is why we speak of a convention: the different countries agree on the extent of their respective limits; upon crossing this limit (the border), one enters the territory of the neighbouring country.

The border, therefore, marks a sovereignty . The government of a country has authority within the limits of its borders. What happens beyond, even a few meters, is outside its concern, as long as it does not affect its national interests.

Types of borders

Borders can be land-based, although there are also maritime, river, lake and even air borders.

When talking about borders, we must also make clear that there is a wide range of them. Thus, for example, in addition to those already mentioned, we can refer to cultural, social and economic borders. The latter are those established taking into account financial issues.

However, we must not forget the existence of what are known as natural borders, which, as their name indicates, are those that separate territories by a geographical feature, such as a mountain, a valley or a river, for example.

Controls and patrols

Every border is usually monitored to prevent the illegal entry of immigrants or prohibited products (such as drugs or contraband).

The border between the United States and Mexico , for example, is one of the most closely guarded in the world, as thousands of Mexican citizens try to enter the northern country in search of better living conditions, despite the fact that, on many occasions, they do not meet the legal requirements necessary to enter the neighboring country.

Wiring

It is common for states to install fences or build walls to protect their borders.

In this regard, we must point out that Spain has a series of borders that periodically become news in the various media due to the large number of people who try to cross them. We are referring to the three borders that it maintains with Morocco: in Melilla, in Ceuta and in Vélez de la Gomera.

Many African inhabitants of that country are using all kinds of means to jump over the metal fences that separate them from Spain, with the clear objective of trying to find a better future outside their nation.

Frontera: a car, a musical group and a publishing house

On the other hand, Frontera is a car model manufactured by General Motors . Depending on the market , you can buy an Opel Frontera , an Isuzu Frontera or a Holden Frontera .

Likewise, we cannot overlook the fact that in Spain there is a musical group called “La Frontera”. This group was formed in the 1980s, led by Javier Andreu, and has since released almost twenty albums that have brought them great success with songs such as “Duelo al sol”, “Judas el Miserable”, “El límites” and “Beber hasta recordarte”.

Finally, Editorial Frontera was an Argentine comic book publishing house founded by Héctor Germán Oesterheld , the creator of “El Eternauta” .
