Definition of

Federation

Agreement

A federation is an entity that is created by uniting the different parties involved.

Federation is the act of federating (that is, generating union through alliances, leagues, mergers or pacts between various parties involved ). By extension, it is known as a federation - a term that has its origin in the Latin foederatĭo - that entity , organization or State that is formed from said action.

The federal State (also called federal republic ) is one that brings together multiple territorial entities, such as provinces or departments. Generally, these territorial divisions are self-governed with a greater or lesser degree of autonomy. The federal administration, on the other hand, is the highest authority and has influence over national affairs.

The notion of federalism is also used to identify the political doctrine that aims to achieve an entity or organization composed of different divisions, to which their own powers and certain freedoms are delegated.

Examples of federation

USA, Germany, Mexico, Brazil, Australia, Venezuela y Argentina son ejemplos actuales de federaciones (Estados o republics federales).

It should be noted that, at some historical moments, the federated territories may demand their independence. This occurred after the separation of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics ( USSR ).

Argentine flag

The Argentine Republic is a State organized as a federation.

The term in sport

In the sports field, it is very common to use the term federation to refer to each and every one of the entities that are created in this field and that bring together teams and athletes from different disciplines. Thus, for example, there is the Royal Spanish Football Federation that has a series of governing bodies such as the General Assembly, the Delegate Commission, the President and the corresponding Board of Directors.

In this same sport, at an international level we should talk about FIFA , which is the International Federation of Association Football . It began its journey in 1904 , has its headquarters in Zurich and is made up of more than 200 football federations.

Among the main characteristics of said organization, we must highlight the fact that it is responsible for organizing various tournaments worldwide in both the men's and women's categories. Thus, for example, it celebrates the Football World Cup , the Women's Olympic Football Tournament and the FIFA Futsal World Championship .

In addition to those mentioned, there are many sports federations around the planet such as the FIBA ( International Basketball Federation ), the FIM ( International Motorcycle Federation ) or the ITF ( International Tennis Federation ).

Federations in other areas

However, we cannot ignore the fact that many other fields of society also have their own federations.

Thus, for example, in the field of the heart we can talk about the World Heart Association , which is the World Federation of Cardiology , dedicated to researching and publicizing the different medical advances that occur in this area.

Other uses of the concept

It should be noted that Federación is also a city located in the Argentine province of Entre Ríos , on the right bank of the Uruguay River . With about 14,000 inhabitants, the city is an important tourist attraction thanks to its spas and hot springs.

Finally, it should be noted that the Federal League (also known as the Union of Free Peoples ) was an organization promoted by José Gervasio Artigas with the intention of establishing a federal government in the United Provinces of the Río de la Plata .
