For example: “Our political party works to achieve an equitable distribution of wealth” , “The equitable development of the nation is an outstanding debt” , “We have to guarantee that there is an equitable distribution of aid” .
Precisely, if we observe in detail the etymology of this word, we will notice that it comes from the Latin aequivalens , which can be translated as "impartial, neutral." The lexical components of this Latin word, on the other hand, are the following: aequu , which means "plain, equitable, balanced, fair , equal", and the suffix -ivo , which can denote a passive or active relationship, depending on the case. .
The importance of equitable distribution
Equity is a desired value in most areas. That is why certain issues are expected to be equitable since that is what is considered correct or appropriate. Equitable, after all, is reasonable or impartial .
Suppose that the authorities of a municipality decide to give toys to children to celebrate Christmas . All the kids who live in the area, therefore, should receive a gift. However, the distribution is not equitable: officials give the toys to the children of members of their political party, discriminating against the rest. An equitable delivery, on the other hand, would not be subject to these types of conditions.
A mother with three minor children, on the other hand, should extend the same treatment to her descendants. If one of your children is your favorite and receives benefits that the other two do not, you are not being equitable.
Many times, when the distribution of something is not equitable, an injustice occurs.
When equity is not fair
It should be noted, however, that what is equitable is not always the fairest . Take the case of two co-workers who have the same position: one works hard and fulfills his obligations, while the other is often absent without reason and rests almost all day. If the salary is equitable for all workers with a certain position, both will earn the same. But this, given the mentioned characteristics, is not fair in this specific case.
In any society that prides itself on betting on equality, there must be constant work that aims towards equitable access to different opportunities . This group includes new technologies, scientific advances in the field of health, jobs and any other aspect of modern life that facilitates the personal and professional development of citizens.
Equitable access to opportunities
We find ourselves in an era that is characterized by the predominance of a series of technologies, mainly in the field of communications, to the point that they have become part of the culture itself: in large cities, middle class people cannot imagine a reality without Internet or mobile phones. This becomes even more complex in those regions where there are state-of-the-art means of transportation, movie theaters that are pioneering in their projection methods, and sports stadiums with innovative designs.
Low-income citizens do not have access to any of these opportunities, and this creates a fissure in society that distances it from an ideal of harmony and justice. Although poverty is a very complex issue, about which it is not easy to give an opinion without having precise information about several complementary issues, at first glance it is not equitable that there are people suffering from hunger and cold while others change their mobile phone every year. Far from being a problem that no one addresses, there are many groups dedicated to promoting equality and little by little they are achieving significant changes.
