Building under construction

The verb edify can mean "to raise a building."

The Latin word aedificāre came into Spanish as edify . The first meaning of the term mentioned by the Royal Spanish Academy ( RAE ) in its dictionary refers to erecting a building .

Build

Building, in this framework, is associated with building . Whoever promotes or specifies the development of a property or a similar structure is building. For example: “The local government announced that it will begin to build a new hospital in the downtown area,” “They have already approved our credit, now all that remains is for them to grant us authorization to build,” “If the population continues to grow at this rate "It will soon be necessary to build a new school."

It is important to keep in mind that a building can be used for multiple activities. It could be a home , a health center , an educational establishment , a business , an industrial plant or a cultural venue , to name just a few possibilities. That is why there are countless reasons to build.

Likewise, there are also many ways to build a structure . One of the factors that can change the most is the materials , both in type and proportions: even two buildings that have the same materials, one focused on natural lighting has a greater proportion of glass than one to house merchandise, for example. . The location also varies according to the purpose of the building: a hospital should be in an easily accessible area, while a hostel may be located away from the center.

symbolic meaning

The idea of building can also be used in a symbolic sense regarding the creation , foundation , establishment or establishment of something: “We must all work together to build a way out of this enormous crisis,” “The writer set out to build a new current.” literary” , “Little by little, the coach managed to build a solid team capable of obtaining good results in any stadium in the country” .

Just as a material building can have different purposes, a symbolic one too. In any case, in this case we are not thinking of the idea of "building", but of " plan " or "project", among other possibilities, that have a well-defined objective. In the examples we see that there is talk of "a way out", understood as a strategy to overcome a crisis, of "a literary current", which involves a series of changes and artistic innovations with respect to the current one, and of "a sports team », thinking beyond people as material entities to focus on their qualities and the performance they can achieve in games.

Instill virtues and values

The concept of edifying, finally, is used with respect to instilling virtues and positive values : “A social reference must always edify young people and try to instruct them so that they become active members of the community” , “You must edify the children and keep them away from vices” , “I dedicate my time to building up my son” .

Group of student children

Building is also understood as “instilling virtues and values.”

In this sense we can also speak of "edifying activities", which are those that edify those who carry them out. The aforementioned virtue and values, therefore, can be transmitted by people directly to their children or students, for example, but they can also be imbued in certain activities designed with the purpose of enriching the participants.

In the aforementioned examples, we have a clear idea of the sector of society to which these efforts are usually directed: the youngest . This does not mean that an adult and educated person cannot continue to build themselves, but rather that the best bet for a community is always the children, the youngest ones, on whom the future of the Earth will one day depend. For the work to be effective, we must give them a healthy and functional world along with the tools to improve it, elevate it to levels that are simply not possible for us.
